If you want something done right, enlist the help of a toddler. As you can see from the photograph, Agent Sean accomplished his mission. And not a moment too soon. Sunday morning I coaxed the last vapors out of the bottle.
However, the gift I most enjoyed was on Saturday morning when Antique Daddy sent me off to Half Price Books – alone! – where I got to spend two glorious hours loitering, looking, lolling and lounging in my favorite book store. I filled my basket with everything from Sedaris to Suess. And I had a 15% off coupon. And I got a free book bag. It is a cruddy little bag, but free! Makes me giddy.
Yet the best gift of all was Saturday afternoon. I returned home from the bookstore to find Sean sitting in his daddy’s lap having lunch. I handed him a book I had picked up for him. He looked up at me with those big blue eyes and gave me the biggest smile and said, without prompt, “Thank you Mommy for buying me a book!” And for that I would trade Estee Lauder herself.
Note: If you are reading this, and for whatever reason, your prayer to become a mother has gone unanswered, I want you to know that my heart aches for you. I want you to know that I have not forgetten how painful this day is for those for whom motherhood has been denied. And I want you to know that I celebrate you, even if Hallmark does not.
