  • So Flippin’ Cool

    April 30, 2008

flip videoLast year, the lovely folks at Flip Video sent me their little hand held video-gadgety thingeedoo to try out and it was love at first sight.  This year they sent me one to give away to you, just in time for Mother’s Day! Yay nice Flip people!

Here’s the lowdown on The Flip:  It is custom made for someone like me with a low techno-IQ and little time/patience/energy to figure stuff out and it’s small enough to fit in your purse.

It is so simple to use.  Seriously, I took it out of the box, shot some video and then uploaded it (or is it downloaded?) to a video service in about 15 minutes. I keep it in my car just in case Sean does something cute or I spot a UFO and the local news needs footage. Because if a UFO is going to land on Earth, you better believe it will be in Texas.

You can get one at most of the usual places where techno-gadgetry is sold.  Or you can leave a comment here and maybe win one.

Leave a comment on this post by midnight Thursday (5/1) telling me your mother’s first name (or your favorite mom-type person) and some fun factoid about her.  I’ll randomly draw a name to win a 60-minute Flip Video.

I’ll go first.  My mother’s name is Vivian.  Her parents named her Alberta but someone changed it on the birth certificate to Vivian. No one knows who.  It was too much trouble to change back, so Vivian she is to this day or “Bib” as her family calls her.  Or Wivian.  Also, her grandmother kidnapped her when she was five and took her to St. Louis. But that’s a story for another day.

    * * * * * *

Edited to Add: Y’all! I am loving your comments and hearing about your moms. I really should be doing about a zillion other things, but I can’t tear myself away.

Edited Again to Add: Even though the contest is over, feel free to leave a comment about your mom! I love reading them.

    1. Starr says:

Melynda. Fun factoid: Her name is spelled with a “y”, and she loves to write loopy letters, so my middle name “Nycole” has a “y” as well. I continued the tradition with my three kids, Ryan, Dylan, and Lauryn.

    2. Diana says:

      We’re both up late tonight!

My mom’s name is Janice. She wanted my daughter to call her Auntie Janice because she wasn’t thrilled about the whole grandma thing. She settled for Grandmomma.

    3. Amy says:

      My Mom’s name is Virginia.

She was the most amazing seamstress in the whole world. She could look at something and create it on her Singer. What a woman she was!

    4. Cathy says:

My mom’s name was Alice, but everybody called her Sweet Alice. Her Gyno gave her that knic-name years ago. #2 We are all very sick and twisted and find this to be a fun fact and she would love it. She absolutely loved the color pink, everything was pink. We lost her two months ago, she is now residing in a lovely pink vault (who knew they made such?) that actually sparkled in the sunshine. It was a true shame they hid it away in the ground as it was a thing of rare beauty.

    5. Sue says:

My mom’s first name is Linda. Well, EVENTUALLY it was Linda. When she was born (way back in the stone ages), they still put women completely under for childbirth, and when the nurse came around with the birth certificate my grandmother, still in a drug induced fog, told them the baby’s name was Doris.

She had no memory of saying this, and didn’t actually notice the “mistake” on her birth certificate for about a year, when she pulled it out one day, choked on her breakfast and made my Grandfather have it changed.

    6. Natalie says:

My mom’s name is Nancy, and she’s had a rough go of it right from the start – she went from the hospital directly to the orphanage. But she is gentle and sweet and kind, almost to a fault.

My mom has a MI, most likely from never having a home and parents of her own, and for several years (maybe 12?) she lived in a shared housing situation with two other housemates, and a counselor who visited several times a week to help them do various things (shopping, etc.). A little over a year ago, my sister bought my mother a brand new townhouse, and has decorated it *beautifully* – it could be in a magazine! – and my mom is so very, very proud of it. Not surprisingly, my mom is doing very well with my sister caring for her, and in many ways, mothering her like she’d never had a chance to be mothered early on. I don’t know if this counts as “fun”, but I can assure you, my mom is healthier and happier than she’s been in a long, long time. :)

    7. Diane J. says:

Jessie Luerene. She hated her first name because she thought it was too masculine for a woman, so she was known to Lue to most friends and family. For some reason, some of Daddy’s friends and family called her Becky or Beck. Even she never knew where that came from.

She went on to be with her Lord on April 13, 2005 and I love her and miss her so, to this very day and beyond.

      April 30th, 2008 at 3:09 am

    8. Photochick (Amanda) says:

My mom’s name is Janet Louise. She has about the coolest family history ever! Her mother’s great-great-grandmother & grandfather actually came to America from Germany on a ship. At the time of the journey, they had a baby daughter that they didn’t really think stood much of a chance of surviving the journey… Because they couldn’t bear the thought of putting her body out to sea, the father prepared for the voyage by making a little bitty casket for little Charlotte (their little baby girl). Amazingly, Charlotte DID survive the journey to America! Today that little casket sits in New Harmony Museum (close to where we live)
I don’t know if that actually count about something about my Mom, though… So, how about this: her parents thought that they weren’t able to have children so they adopted my Uncle Darrel. Less than 2 years later – surprise! My Granny was pregnant! But the big surprise came after the birth… of twins boys! My Mom was then born just a couple of years later. They all grew up on my Grandpa’s dairy farm, and today that farm is run by my twin Uncles.
Hmm… there’s not really a whole lot JUST about my mom in there, though, is there? OK! Here we go – this is all about my Momma! She has the most beautiful shade of blue-green eyes I’ve ever seen; she loves the outdoors – gardening, landscaping, tending to her flowers; and if she knew I was writing all this about her, she’d probably beg me not to! She’s incredibly shy. Finally, she’s the best Mother I could have ever asked for. I strive in every way to be like her – she’s my role model and best friend.

Thanks so much for such a fun contest! I think I love your contests so much because they make me get creative and write about things that I may have never thought to do so before. Much love to you and yours, AM! Take care and God Bless – oh, and I hope that you have an absolutely wonderful Mothers Day!

    9. Missy says:

My mum’s name is Gayle. For a while there I thought I’d call my first daughter Abigail, but then I met a girl with the same name and changed my mind. It’s weird how that can happen.

      April 30th, 2008 at 3:37 am

    10. kelli says:

Her name is Diane, In the 50′s, she had a TV show in memphis called “Princess Diane”. She told stories with stuffed animals and puppets as her “story group”. We still have her crown. It had to be spraypainted blue to be seen on camera back then.

      April 30th, 2008 at 3:52 am

    11. jennifer says:

      My mom’s name is Angela.
Friday she broke her pinkie toe! She’s a daycare director, and would NEVER dream of taking a day off work due to a taped up foot. So, she’s hobbling around, taking care of her employees and the kids, and I can’t be there to help! I live in Africa right now, and she’s in Alabama. I miss her something awful, especially since she’s hurt!

      April 30th, 2008 at 4:39 am

    12. Todd M says:

My mother’s name is Meredith. My father’s name is Don. Together, they became “Don Meredith”. Weird, huh?

      April 30th, 2008 at 5:17 am

    13. Daren says:

Mom’s name is Deidrie. Her mother liked to spell her daughter’s names oddly, obviously.

I’ve always thought it was interesting that my mother attended 19 different schools. Her father was an engineer for Boeing causing them to relocate alot. Because they often had next to no notice about an upcoming move, my grandmother always had the makings for goulash in a box, ready to go. Grab that box, and at least they’d have something to eat at the new place. To this day, my mother hates goulash. Says it reminds of her being the odd girl out again.

      April 30th, 2008 at 5:50 am

    14. Moriah @ Please Pass the Salt says:

My mom’s name is Debbi and she’s famous for asking questions she already knows the answer to. Sometimes endearing, sometimes not.

      April 30th, 2008 at 6:21 am

    15. Lisa says:

Dee (actually Lessie) She doesn’t have a birth certificate so I’m not sure how I’d get her a passport if I wanted to take her abroad. She is the oldest of eight and turned 87 in January. I was her Sean…she was a mere 39 when I was born and my brother was 15. She says she prayed for twins everyday because she didn’t want to raise another only child and then THANKED HIM daily when she discovered what a handful I was.

      April 30th, 2008 at 6:50 am

    16. Lesley says:

My mom’s name is Marlene. When she retired she moved back to the small town she was raised in and lives in the house her dad built.

      April 30th, 2008 at 6:55 am

    17. Damsel says:

That flip looks AWESOME — just what I need since my sister is moving away to Minnesota with her new husband… she’d love for me to video him 24/7 as it is now!

My mother’s first name is Carla. She has always had an incredible gift that allowed her to just LOOK at someone and know they are lying. *ahem* That is why I am not a good liar — I grew up thinking that everyone would be able to just look at me and know, so I never spent any time perfecting the … um… “art” (or is it a science?) of lying.

      April 30th, 2008 at 6:56 am

    18. Damsel says:

Oh, and the “him” to whom I’m referring is my three-year-old son. (THAT could have been embarrassing. Sheesh.)

      April 30th, 2008 at 6:56 am

    19. Tonggu Momma says:

My mom’s name is Sherri. A fun factoid about her — a couple of decades ago, she had to have surgery to remove part of her salivary gland. Whenever she eats spicy food, a dime-sized oval on her cheek beads up with sweat.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:06 am

    20. Kelly says:

My mom’s first name is Anna, and she is a farmer’s daughter. She had to gather the eggs every morning before school.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:08 am

    21. Wendy says:

My mom’s name is Mary Helen – all her nieces & nephews call her that & so did her parents but she hated to be called by both names & in her own social circles she is only “Mary”. Fun Factoid: (one is not enough but here goes) When she & my dad & brother & sister lived in Japan (stationed with USAF) in the 50s, my dad was throwing her a surprise birthday party & to get her out of the house, they drove around randomly to random places & made her sit in the car. Not too bad – except it was in the midst of a typhoon!

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:20 am

    22. Jenn says:

I would love to give that neat little video camera to my sister since she is the best mom I know (our own mom is pretty great, too).
Kim grew these amazing little creatures for me to play with and now they are growing into amazing young boys.
She works full time, cooks dinner every night, cleans up after the craziness and still manages to shoot baskets with her oldest or ride bikes with the youngest.
      She’s amazing.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:22 am

    23. Bethany says:

My mom’s name is Betty. She’s the middle child of 5, is extremely patient, serves her family and church with a willing servant’s heart, and one of my best friends.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:29 am

    24. Karen says:

My mom’s name is Paulette. She was named Olive Paulette at birth, but she hated it so very much that when she was sixteen her parents let her change it legally to Paulette Renae.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:29 am

    25. Brigitte says:

My mom’s name is Nicole (well, I think it was “Marie Nicole”, but ALL the girls had Marie as a first name in the area where she grew up).

When she was a little girl, she and a friend found a real, live honeybee hive and were thrilled to be able to eat the little white nodules of honey . . that she only later found were the baby bees, NOT the honey. She still says they TASTED like honey, though!

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:31 am

    26. Beverlydru says:

My mom is Bettye Blue. She is an identical twin and to this day is so much like her sister it’s amazing. They used to switch dates in college and no one was the wiser. They are quite a pair. I have always felt like my first cousins are really half sisters. It’s special.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:37 am

    27. Melessa says:

My mom’s name is Linda Lou and I had at least two other friends in high school with moms by that same name. Apparently, it was popular in the 1940′s.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:42 am

    28. Kathy Didds says:

Beverly. Not an unusual name for her generation, but she has an unusual story. Mom was born in Honolulu, Hawaii three and a half months before Pearl Harbor was born. My granparents were living there while my grandfather’s company was constructing government projects at Hickham Field Air Base. He was playing tennis when the Japanese bomber planes flew over the islands, and actually heard the engines, saw the planes (but not the “colors” on them, and wondered what “our boys were doing out so early”. They were relocated to the States (Hawaii was not yet one of the “States”) on a blackout ship several months later.

My mom was a bride at 18( a lot of women were back then), mother at 19 and 20, and widow at 21. She worked extremely hard to keep our little family going in the right direction, and I was blessed with my “new dad” when I was 6 years old. She’s been a great mom, and I’d love to bless her with this fun little gadget so she can record my dad playing in his “Over 60 Tournament Softball League”. He’s 69 1/2 and going strong, pitching for the other “old guys”.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:46 am

    29. That Girl says:

My mother is Jane. She is an identical twin and when she was born, my granny was mad that she had twins and wouldn’t name them. My great grandmother told the nurses to call one of them Jeanie and one of them Janie. The nurses decided which was which. Oh – my granny likes them both now! :)

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:48 am

    30. heidi says:

My mom’s name is Irene. My grandmother was Edna Irene; and I am Heidi Irene, and my cousin is Tami Irene. Not the coolest name, but it sure is popular in our family.
My mom was 14 when her mother had twins. The twins were 12 when their mother died. My aunt moved in with us, and my uncle moved in with our great grandmother. I was 4 at the time. My parents raised my aunt as though she was their own. I grew up thinking she was my sister.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:48 am

    31. Heather says:

Long time lurker here, love your writing!

My mom is Elaine and she is about to become a grandma for the 4th time…though me for the first time :)

Did you see the Oprah on puppy mills? My mom is one of those people who rescues dogs and cats. She (and my Dad) are dedicated to saving one life at a time and have provided hundreds of people with loving companions. As one of her children we struggle (at times) with feeling as loved as the bizzilions of dogs she focuses on, but when it is put into perspective it is hard to not view her as a saint for all she does.

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:50 am

    32. tas says:

My mom’s name is Lynne, and I love her to pieces. She’s my step mother. The most amazing thing about her (for me) is that she got an instant family when she married my dad. But I never once said ‘you’re not my mom’ It takes a special woman to do that.
She also never stops baking….there are always cookies, brownies, pies loafs, or whatever there! yum!

      April 30th, 2008 at 7:53 am

    33. rebecca says:

My mom is Shirley May, but was always called Shay by all her friends because there were so many Shirley’s in her neighborhood.

Her first boyfriend called her Shay, so my dad refused to, and after they married, she became plain Shirley again. My dad’s out of luck, though, because when we adopted our daughter from China, we named her….Shay.

My mom married at 16, and had 6 kids by the time she was 29. Maybe not too fun for her, but she says she was “young and dumb” enough to enjoy it. She became a grandmother at 36. Now, that’s crazy!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:02 am

    34. Sarah N says:

My mother’s name at birth was Betty. And she hated it. Finally when she turned 50, as a present to herself, she had it legally changed to Elizabeth. Most people who have known her forever call her Betty, but her newer aquaintances call her Elizabeth.

As an added factoid, Mom’s mom’s name is Virginia Dare – after the first child born in America to English parents in 1587.

      Thanks for a great giveaway!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:04 am

    35. MommyJ says:

My Mom’s first name is Clare, but she goes by her middle name, Lindsay. Because her mother was named Clare, and went by Clare, and I guess they didn’t want to have the same name. My middle name is Clare, after Mom and Grandma, and if I ever manage to have another baby girl, she will be Clare as well.

Fun factoid… when my mother was 12 years old, she saw the beatles in concert with her church group, sat on the end of the stage, and slapped hands with John Lennon. I think it’s awesome that her youth minister took them to see the beatles!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:06 am

    36. klutzymama says:

My mom’s name is Sherrie, but she’s always wished it was Valerie. She even goes to the extent of buying those little keychains with names on them that say “Valerie” and carrying them around on her keys!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:08 am

    37. Shelly Deans says:

My mom’s name is Haven. She has recently had to have not one, but 2 shots in her eye! Yikes. She was very brave. Next week just the 2 of us leave for a road trip from Flordia to Oklahoma to see my sister graduate from college.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:08 am

    38. misslisslee says:

My mom’s name is Donna. She was probably way excited over Neil Diamond on American Idol. She turned 60 this year. She shares the same middle name with me and her mother. I have only boys, so apparently the buck stops here.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:11 am

    39. Tracy @ My Cup Runneth Over says:

My Mom’s name is Shirley — named after Shirley Temple. She grew up helping to cook for her 10 siblings. By the time she and my Dad were married, she was an old pro adn still cooks like nobody’s business. Another really cool thing about her is she LOVES making beautiful quilts and wall-hangings. When my Grandma died, she took all her dresses (most of which were varying shades of purple — her favorite color) and made wall hangings for all her siblings and for my sister and I. She’s precious!

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share!

      Blessings! = )

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:12 am

    40. Beth says:

My mom’s name is Jo. Fun factoid… she must have some sort of strange problem between her ears and brain with processing music, because she can NOT get the words to songs right! Back in the day, there was a popular song on the radio called Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, and she insisted that it was Gunga Dee and The Jungle Beat! Just an example of the many songs thru the years … :)

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:15 am

    41. Jessica says:

My mom’s name is Jeanne; however, she pronounces it, Jeannie. Her given name is Jeanne Ann, but her nickname as a child was Jeannie and it stuck; however, she still spells it Jeanne, pronounced with a long E. She was also called “greenie Jeannie” in high school because she was so naive. I’d say she’s not so naive anymore.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:17 am

    42. Marie says:

      Ooooh!

My Mom’s name is Joan. I just learned that she got on a bike for the first time when she was in 8th grade!! She was amazed to hear that her grandson has his first 2-wheeler at age 4.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:17 am

    43. Wendy says:

My mom’s name was Constance; her friends called her Connie, but my cousins called her “Nonnie” when the firstborn couldn’t say “Aunt Connie” and shortened it up. There’s a lot of fun factoids about her, but I’ll stick with my two faves…1) she and her younger sister were famous in the town they grew up in for their tap-dancing skills (we have pics of the two of them in stage costumes, hoofing away), and 2) she met my dad on Bermuda, while he was stationed at the Air Force base and she was teaching school there.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:20 am

    44. Marsha says:

My Mom’s name is Jane. Our family calls her Central. Because a long time ago, one of us commented that “Mom is central dispatch”…she knows everything, she keeps up with everything, she does everything for us…She’s a WONDERFUL Mom and I love her so much!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:21 am

    45. Fraulein says:

My mom is Antoinette Rosina, but she has always gone by Toni. (And my dad is Eugene, so together they are Toni and Gene, but sometimes people make the mistake of thinking they are Tony and Jean!) At 75, she is one of a disappearing generation of hard-core Italian cooks still going strong in the greater New York/New Jersey area. Still cooking the Christmas Eve “seven fishes” and baking up a storm all year long.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:22 am

    46. Lesley says:

Linda is my mom and she is very laid back, has a green thumb like I have ever seen and loves Jesus.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:24 am

    47. Tammy Marcelain says:

My mother’s name – Beryl Beryl is a precious stone that is talked about in the Bible. She pronounced it like Cheryl but with a “B” I can’t tell you how many times I heard her explain the pronunciation of her name that way. She was an Aussie born and raised and came over to the states to see Elvis Presley. She was a great mom, full of spunk and fire.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:26 am

    48. Monica says:

My mom’s name was Nancy. She was my best friend. A fun factoid is she was “green” before being green was cool. When we had birthday parties or family meals, she would make us write our names on our disposable cups (ok, so she wasn’t green enough to make us use actual glasses…but who wanted to wash all those after a party?!?) so we wouldn’t waste them by getting a new one everytime we wanted a drink.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:26 am

    49. Liz says:

My mom’s name is Sherry and she’s a 66 year old ball of energy. She can outwork me, outpray me, and outdo me in everyway. :-)

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:28 am

    50. Karen (Simply A Musing Blog) says:

My mother’s first name is Hazel. But she hates that name and has always insisted on being called by her middle name, “Karlene”.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:31 am

    51. Fiddledeedee (It Coulda Been Worse) says:

My mama’s name was Margaret Ann. She once told a gal interviewing hapless shoppers at the Piggly Wiggly, that the main reason she was purchasing that particular brand of toilet paper, was “Because it’s the only kind that doesn’t scratch my a**.”

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:33 am

    52. Amy says:

My mom’s name is Sally Faye. She has always dis-liked her name, and when she was little, she pretended her name was Sarah. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, she even nudged me to name her Sarah (with an ‘h’, of course)! Fun tidbit – when she was a senior in High School, her school merged with the local rival high school. So, she and her class had to move to the new school with all of her local rivals. The new principal was a nasty old man and rode down the hallways in a golf cart snapping and yelling at the students!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:35 am

    53. Gina says:

My mom’s name is Marlene. She is an identical twin. She was a stay at home mom when I was growing up, but now she works for Macys and she has been named employee of the year alsmot every single year since she started. She’s amazing.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:40 am

    54. Lori says:

My mom’s actual first name is Mary. But she goes by Diane, her middle name. She decided when she was three that she didn’t want to be Mary anymore, because there were “too many Mary’s”! She still likes to be an *individual*. She’s the BEST!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:43 am

    55. Jessie says:

My mom’s name is Donna. When she was pregnant with me she worked at a bank and was in a hold-up!

She’s also just awesome. She has four sisters and they all have names that are five letters and four letters for the middle name, until Grandma got to #5 and she just got lazy and named the girl Barbara.

    56. JCK says:

My mother’s name is Michaelin. She continues to inspire me. She just turned 70 and is very athletic. She climbed Mt. Washington in N.H. last summer – over 6,000 feet in just a few hours. She also plays tennis, swims, hikes and has 20 grandchildren.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:44 am

    57. Kim says:

My mom’s first name is Hilda, but don’t tell anyone. Officially she is Jo H. We have never had a holiday where my mom didn’t burn the rolls. It’s a tradition now to peel off the burned crusty bottom before eating. She’s a good cook, but those brown & serve’s get her every time.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:47 am

    58. Jan says:

My mother’s name is Patsy. After 14 years alone, after my daddy passed on, she fell in love again, and remarried. What fun it is to see the sparkly, girly, freshly-in-love side of my mother! with 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and another on the way, she seems to have found the fountain of youth in Pa (our new step-father).

    59. KathyK says:

My mother’s name is Joan. She was the eighth of 10 children. Her Aunt Vera, who was a school teacher, named all the children. My mother was named after Joan of Arc.

    60. Lisa Kay says:

My mother’s name was Frances. She decided to be a stay at home mom when she had me – not a popular choice in the 70′s. She could sew, cook, tend to a garden, and keep the house spotless without messing up her hair. And that’s the truth!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:51 am

    61. Cyndi says:

My mom’s name is Ilean. She was adopted at 6 months old and raised as an only child by my wonderful grandparents. She always wanted a brother or sister. She found her biological information about 3 years ago and now has a brother and sister. I’ve never seen her so happy.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:53 am

    62. Kate says:

Wow….some pretty unusual names here for such older people! Names that I thought were new and trendy, apparently are old and passe!!

My mom’s name is Joan, and she was named after Joan Crawford. However, she was a great mom and NOTHING like Mommie Dearest!!!

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:54 am

    63. Tami says:

My mom’s name is Melissa – - though she pronounces it as ma-leesa. Her interesting factoid is that she has the most beautiful translucent “sea green” eyes I’ve ever seen!!

    64. susie says:

My mother’s name is Loudelle (pronounced like “Lou” not “loud”). My family moved a lot when I was growing up (I went to 12 schools in 12 years) and she always made every house seem like home.

    66. tonya says:

My mom’s name is Donna. She had me when she was 18 and became a grandmother when she was 43. We thought she was too young to be a grandmother (LOL!) but we lovingly dubbed her Granny in making light of her youth but that she was a grandmother. So she is Granny but in no way what you envision of a Granny. A family joke got started calling her Super Granny because she is always helping us with our horses and pretty soon it got shortened to Super G amongst our friends. So, a lot of our friends from the horse shows call her Super G. She is the best “Granny” ever!

    67. bonniebeth says:

My mother’s name is Eloise – no middle name.
She was the middle child of eleven and her job was to cook for the family. A younger brother and sister thought the food was too spicy and so they pulled up all of the pepper plants in the garden. What they didn’t know was that their father liked his food spicy – so he spanked them with a cotton stalk.
She married a preacher when she was 19 and began her cooking ministry. She is the only person I know who converted a mean old man with her chicken and dumplings.

She is also one of many women whom Bill Clinton has kissed :0)

    68. Jen L. says:

My mom’s name is Patricia but no one calls her that – it’s either Trish or Trisha. There are so many fun facts about her but my favorite is a memory of our trip to Colorado when I was in the 10th grade. We didn’t stay in a hotel with continental breakfast so we had to stop at McD’s for hot tea. Well, no sooner was it handed to her but she spilled it. So we went to BK to get another cup of tea – she spilled it too. I think we went to Hardees where her lovely daughter put the sugar in. We still tease her about it to this day (almost 20 years later).

My mom’s name is Marie. My mom was a high school drop out but then went on to get her GED. She went to college and then to law school where she got straight A’s. She decided to read the Bible to prove it wrong but instead got saved:)

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:07 am

    73. ShackelMom says:

My mother’s name is Barbara. She just turned 80 and has less gray hair than I do! She was a good little girl growing up, so it was a bit of a shock when she got me. But she does remember doing one bad thing; pulling a chair out from under a boy who was just sitting down, when she was six.

Now she is a wise woman and has a steady stream of people who come through her home to get her wise counsel. She has been the wise and caring mother that so many have needed in her years of ministry with my Dad to college and single adults. Such a blessing! And I’m the one who gets to call her ‘Mom!’

My mom’s name is Rosemary. She was adopted twice. The first couple who adopted her divorced when she was two so they didn’t see the need to keep her. She was an only child who went on to have 11 of her own. Then Dad died and she was left to raise them by herself…11 kids ages 2 to 15. Fun times in our house!

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:08 am

    76. Mandy says:

My mom’s name is Sue. My mom survived an abusive ex-husband , worked two jobs, owned a restaurant and raised three kids with the help of her parents. Out of her three siblings, she is the only one to raise children that all completed high school and went on to receive higher education. She wasn’t (and isn’t) a perfect mom, but she is always there for our family. It has been a tough year for my mom. She lost both of her brothers to cancer within three months of each other. She has overcome a lot and still loves her Savior and is a terrific Mimmie to all of her grandkids.

    77. Jenny 867-5309 says:

Mum’s name is Sherril. Everyone just “knows” it’s spelt Cheryl. She’s so tired of correcting people that all her medical information, etc has her down as Cheryl. That would drive me nuts!

    80. shayne says:

      My mom’s name is Janice.

She’s scared of heights and one time, while she was at a seminar with her co-workers, they thought it would be fun to stay at a hotel with a glass elevator, and book a room on the 5th floor. Let’s just say that not a good time was had by any.

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:17 am

    81. Sharon says:

My mom’s name is Virginia and she talks to everybody and anybody. When I was a kid it took forever to shop or do anything as she would get into long conversations with (until then) strangers. Now, I appreciate her friendliness….

    82. chilihead says:

      My mom’s name is Donna.

One time she was visiting me she decided she wanted to go out for breakfast. I was fairly new to our area and didn’t know where anything was. We stopped at a gas station and Donna went in to ask the clerk if he knew where we could eat breakfast.

She came out shaking her head. When I asked what was going on she said, “He kept talking about Benny Jin’s being just down the street on the right.”

“Benny Jin’s?” I asked. She confirmed. So we drove.

And, sure enough, there was a VILLAGE INN just down the street on the right.

    83. Laura says:

My mom’s name is Ruth Ann. Most people call her Ruth but her family calls her Ruth Ann or Ruthie. Her sister who is eight years older named her after someone she liked on a soap opera!

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:25 am

    84. Julie at Elisharose says:

My mother’s name is Judith, but she goes by Judy. Always a little out there for her Catholic school upbringing, she told me that once she was walking up the aisle at church when she felt her petticoat slipping. She let it fall, walked out of it, and threw it over her shoulder.

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:28 am

    85. Elizabeth says:

My mother’s name was Helen. She was a strong, determined woman who never backed down from a challenge. She went to Rutgers University, Class of ’39, as a handicapped (bone infections as a kid) orphaned (dad died of pneumonia) girl on a scholarship (family money lost in ’29) and earned a degree in microbiology, earning her room & board money by cleaning the labs. But to hear her tell it, is was all a great time.

Fun fact: Mother was born just before midnight on May 1, but the doctor didn’t get around to checking the time until after midnight and put down May 2 on the birth certificate. Grandmother always insisted she was right “I was paying attention to the time and let him pay attention to the baby, but he wouldn’t believe me!”

    86. Lauren M says:

My mom’s first name is Vonnie and her favorite TV channel is the Weather Channel! For real! And she’s only 51. She loves knowing what kind of weather is going on around the country and she likes the extra shows they show on there sometimes, like Stormchasers. BORING!! My family loves to tease her about it.

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:29 am

    87. Jennifer says:

My mom’s name is Linda. When she was growing up she had a very common maiden name and there were always multiple girls with the same name as her. She was excited to marry my dad who has an unusual last name (not the only reason she married him :-) ). She thought she would no longer have the same name as someone else. Then my dad’s brother married a Lynda and now she has a sister in law with the same name.

    88. v~ says:

My mom’s name is Dolores and she gave birth to 6 babies, of which I am the oldest. The woman CANNOT be embarassed and felt fitting rooms were a waste of time – especially with so many littles. While dragging us gaggle of kids around K-Mart to buy clothes, she would calmly step into a pair of pants under her long broom skirt, drop the skirt to check herself out in a mirror, pull the skirt back up and drop the pants. It was mortifying. Even more so when she couldn’t understand my lack of desire to try on my first bra OVER my blouse while standing in the aisle. “It saves so much time!” she enthused. Argh! I can only aspire to one day mortify my own children so masterfully.

    89. She's So There... says:

My late mother’s name was Ruth Anne…and when she left for college she convinced her mother, who was 55 to go too….they graduated the same day. Education was important to her and when she left us, her scholarships continue to send girls to college all over the world….she was named for her grandmother, Annie Laurie…and always called Anne.

    90. anonymous says:

My Mom’s name is Evelyn. She is the oldest of 8 and was always called Sis. That later became Aunt Sis to the masses. Looks strange in writing, but it is just a natural part of our family herstory. When she still could, she was one of the last great communicators. She often wrote over 100 notes and letters a month. When her sister had to go into a nursing home, my Mom wrote to her every day. So I’m wondering, ms/mrs. internetz, when was the last time you wrote an actual letter? (Not playing for the flip, just for the fun – thanks!)

    91. Nelson's Mama says:

      My Mom’s name is Janice.

She doesn’t have a middle name, my grandmother hated the the middle name that she gave her first child so she refused to give her remaining three children middle names. How’s that for logic?

My Mom is known as Janny to all of her grandgirls…(and almost all of us now!)

    92. Starnes Friend says:

My mom’s name is Rita. (You already knew that.)
Fun fact: She seriously considered becoming a nun. Nine of her aunts were nuns.
Fun fact: She has two artificial hips and one artificial knee.
Fun fact: She didn’t go completely crazy raising 9 children! (I wasn’t the worst – you can ask her.)

    94. Susan J. says:

I love reading these stories. Thanks for the opportunity for all of us to share.
My mother is Jo Anne, but I am not sure if that is the spelling on her birth certificate. My Mamaw (her mother) usually spelled it Joan, but pronounced it Jo Ann(e). She was born on her brother’s 14th birthday. He joined the Navy when he was still in high school, so he was not around much when she was young. Her best friend even accused her of lying about having a brother.

    97. Dawn says:

My mom’s name is Kathy. Her hair color is never the same twice. I had my son 6 weeks ago and when I picked her up the airport I did not recognize her. This time she was two-toned. Bleach Blond up front and a dark brown, almost black in the back. She had long bangs and looked like a skunk. Before I realized that it was my mom (I saw her from a distance and had my son in my arms who was getting fussy) I thought to myself who would do that to their hair. My dad is a great sport, because you never know what she is going to do to her hair. He never complains of says anything, he just smiles.

    98. Kendra says:

My mother’s name is Linda….an interesting factoiod about her is that she seems quite like a Martha Stewart type, but when it comes to fun she likes to dance and lip sync to “Midnight Train to Georgia”.

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:51 am

    99. Tina W says:

My mother’s name is Floye (named after her dad Floyd). Of course hardly noone pronounces it right so she goes by her middle name, Kay. Her and my father married when she was sixteen and he was seventeen because I was in her belly. This year they will be celebrating 40 years of marriage. Pretty incredible!

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:53 am

    100. April C says:

My mom’s name is Cheryl and she is one of ten kids. All those kids are now spread out over various states, but every time one of them turns 50 they all get together for a birthday party.

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:54 am

    101. Lisa T. says:

My mom’s name is Jean. It’s really Norma Jean, but she is NOT proud of having the same name as Marilyn Monroe, so most people call her Jean. If someone calls asking for Norma, we know it’s either a telemarketer or one of my dad’s sisters, who for some explicable reason still call her Norma despite 50 years of correction. Bizarre.

My mom became a church pianist in 5th grade. Can you imagine??

    103. fern says:

My mom’s name is Evelyn. But I think the first time my son’s high-pitched voice said “Grandma” it sent her over the moon. She is an amazing woman–way ahead of her time. My mom had natural childbirth in the 50′s while all her friends were getting knocked out-she said she didn’t wait 9 months to sleep through it. She had to go to natural childbirth classes where they showed movies of actual childbirth–in black and white. No one told her there would be blood! Pretty brave for a 23 year old. When I was a kid, my friends moms watched soap operas and ironed. My mom took us on rock collecting hunts and walks in the forest preserve. When my friends were told not to get dirty, we were roaming around the neighborhood and digging in the dirt in our back yard. We had all sorts of animals that we found or would buy at the pet store–turtles, snake, crawfish, dogs, chicken, gerbils, hamsters, fish–all this in the suburbs! She believes childhood should be an adventure. She is right.

The biggest compliment I could every get is “you are a lot like your mom.” I only wish I was.

    104. Katherine says:

Lovely memories and thoughts – but I will admit, I love the story about the little girls eating baby bees best!

My mom is Mary Ann – has always gone by first and middle. She is the oldest of five by several years – grandpa’s active sevice having intervened. When she was in highschool and college, she competed with a synchronized swimming team.

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:08 am

    105. Heather S. says:

My mom’s name is Beth…when my husband and I were dating, he said to me one time, “You know, I love your mom. She looks like she is the kind of mom who would bake cookies for you all day and be so sweet.”
She is sweet, but I don’t think in the 15 years my hub and I have been together, she has baked a single cookie (unless you count no-bake chocolate peanut butter cookies, which you probably can’t because they are,you know…NO BAKE cookies).
She is a woman who loves God fiercly and raised me and my two sisters to do the same. She is a woman that typifies living and leading with that gentle and quiet spirit. I love her to pieces…

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:12 am

    106. Renee says:

My mother’s name is Joan but pronounced Joanne. Her mother spelled her name wrong on her certificate and it stuck. My daughter’s middle name is Joan (said Joanne) and we contemplated using the right spelling, but then she wouldn’t be named after my mom?

PS: how do you always get such cool free stuff?

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:14 am

    107. Sherry says:

Andrea and Colleen. They are my daughters’s godmothers and they do double duty when it comes to caring and lovin’ my daughters. Our life would be flat and dull without them!

    109. Heather says:

My mother’s name was Roberta and we lost her to ovarian cancer in 2001. I miss her everyday when I watch my kids. She would have loved them.

The one thing that defined my mother was her generosity, with her own family and those around her. That is the legacy I want to carry on, share and instill in my own kids.

    110. Tabitha says:

I’ve been an admiring ‘lurker’ for awhile now, but thought this a prime chance to make a comment. Because if a UFO is going to land anywhere BUT Texas, it will be in Utah :)

Dawna- She is 1 year and 2 weeks older than her younger sister. She always hated those 2 weeks when her little sister was the same age as she was- she would constantly hear “We’re the same age, we’re the same age…” for those 2 weeks. Now that they are older and grandmas, my mom loves to call her little sister during those two weeks and tease her by saying, “We’re the same age, we’re the same age.”

    111. Sarah says:

My momma’s name is Glenda Sue. She is the most precious person that I know. She poured herself into my sister and me. Interesting fact: She is the fastest reader that I have ever known. She read Gone With the Wind in one day. She can read a hefty novel in a couple of uninterrupted hours. It still amazes me to this day. If she starts reading a book she has to finish it quickly. I’ve never seen her take any longer than 3 days to finish a book.

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:23 am

    112. Coralie says:

My mother’s name is Carole (so is my mil’s, which is handy). She was born and raised in Sydney, the largest city in Australia. When she was 31, she met and married my father (a Canadian) and moved with him to a town in British Columbia that had no stores, no paved roads, no electricity or telephones, and only 45 people. We call that culture shock.

Her father immigrated to Australia from Scotland as a boy, and I have followed in the family tradition by immigrating to the southern United States 10 years ago. It makes me wonder where my daughter will end up.

And I know genetics works because I realized yesterday that I try on purses (yes there is a method) just like my mom. I didn’t realize it until I looked over at her and we were both putting the purse next to our leg to see how it looked next to us.

      Ridiculous.

Mu mother’s name is Bessie. She celebrated her 102nd birthday last October. She is sharp as a tack, lives in an independent apartment in a retirement center. She walks the entire circumference of the center every day several times. Her vision and hearing are both becoming very weak, but she is bravely planning eye surgery in July. She is an inspiration!!

My amazing mama’s name is Terry. She was the Homecoming Queen. She’s a wild, silly woman, so to save myself embarrassment around my friends in high school, I told them all she had Tourette’s Syndrome. (She didn’t mind it.)

      Hi,
My mom’s name is Carol. She was adopted when she was a baby and I think she regrets not finding her birth mom. She lives was to far away from us but her grandkids and her puppy are her joys.

    123. Missy says:

My mom’s name is Mary but she goes by her middle name Susan (Sue) but my dad calls her Jo. Not sure why.. Two fun facts, when she was 18 my dad rescued her from a religious camp when they wouldn’t let her leave. He seriously snuck in in the middle of the night! And in the last year she learned to play guitar and has written over 50 songs that the Lord has given to her!

    124. Kimberly says:

My mom’s name is Beverly. My mom was born to older parents and was an only child. As a result, she never was too outgoing and even as an adult did not have too many good friends. Now that I am older and have 2 kids of my own, we all have so much fun…my mom says she is finding out what fun stuff there is to experience that she missed out on all those years!

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:45 am

    125. Jenny F. says:

My mom’s name is Joanne Francis. Her middle name comes from her Dad’s first name. I’m not sure of the female/male spelling. The correct spelling may be Frances rather than Francis. I can never remember. Mom would correct me on that one. When we were growing up and we would be out in public I could never get her attention by calling mom. She got so use to other kids yelling mom that she assumed it was some other mom being called for. I learned of this early on and took to calling her Joanne Francis in a very loud voice. Even now if I can not get her attention in a crowd I will yell: JOANNE FRANCIS. Maybe that attention comes from memories of being a kid. I think all of us stand in attention when we hear our first and middle names used together. I would love that flippy camera thingy… thanks for this fun contest. I have been enjoying everyone’s comments.

    126. Nicki says:

My Mom’s name is Callie, but my friends and I call her “Naked Mom”.

My mom has always liked to hang out in the buff, that is until my little brother was about six. Apparently she still sleeps naked as the day she was born. How do I know this? She was staying the night at our house one night and walked out of her room in the morning (to use the restroom) at the same time my husband was leaving for work. Umm, uh oh. Hubby was not happy.

    127. Heather says:

My mom’s name is Claudia. She was named after a popular character from the soap opera, Ryan’s Hope. She never really liked her name very much because she could never find any cute magnets or cups with “Claudia” on it.

    128. aggiema says:

My Mom’s name was Wanda (folks at church called her “Wonderful Wanda”) She passed away in Feb. so this will be my first Mother’s Day in 44 years without her. She was a special person and it would take me all day to write enough to do her justice. She loved roses and all things the Lord made but mostly she love ME and my daughter!

    130. Pamela says:

My moma is Marcella Eva. She is 87 on May 22,2008. She thought her name was Marcella Edna for about 55 years. When she saw her birth certificate which was recorded by a midwife. She saw that the midwife(her greatgrandmother) had recorded Eva as a middle name. She was so happy about this as she did not really like the Edna part. She always signs her name Marcella E. and smiles. Her first name, Marcella, was from her father’s girlfriend in Paris during WWI. She was the first living child of Goldy, her mother’s 13 children. All were born at home. Mom is a lot of fun and a strong woman. No one forgets her. She has a huge faith in Jesus that has sustained her from her childhood.

    132. Dawn says:

My mom’s name is Kay. She can fix anything. I had a lamp that quit working and I was going to throw it away. She came over to babysit and brought a whole rewiring kit with her and by the time I came home she rewired the lamp. She grew up on a farm with just her, her mom and her dad. Her mother was an invalid so my mom had to learn to do a lot of things, and it’s really come in handy for us kids. We have our own maintenance lady at our disposal.

    133. Kim (aka Doodles) says:

Mom’s name: Marlene / she feels it is an unusual name.

EVERYONE calls her “Babe” / it’s been her nickname since she was about 5-6 years old. I’ve only known her to be called Babe – everything from “Auntie Babe” to co-workers calling my mom (who is a 73 year old, babe), “Babe.”

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:02 am

    134. Erin says:

My mom’s name is Becky. But it should be Martha, as in Marth Stewart. She is a genius at decorating. She picks out beautiful colors and furniture and accessories and is constantly redoing rooms in her house. I hope that I inherit half of her design touch.

    136. Jennifer says:

My mom’s name is Mary. Her brother tells me that she used to chase him around the kitchen with a butcher knife when they were kids. She says it was just one time and she didn’t intend to actually hurt him. :)

    137. Leslie says:

My mother is Mary Ella. I am really proud to have her as my mama.

One interesting thing about us that our voices sound EXACTLY the same. When there is a message on the answering machine, I have to listen very closely to find out it if is her, or if it is one that I left :)

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:05 am

    138. julianne says:

My mom is Dorothy, and so was her mother. She has beautiful auburn hair, and when she was a little girl, sometimes people would call her “Red.” She would tell them “Don’t call me Red–call me Peetie Pie,” because that’s what her mother called her.

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:05 am

    139. Angela says:

Cheryl, but it’s pronounced like “chair” and not “share”. She had 9 children. I had no idea how amazing a fact that was until I had one child. She’s amazing, for a million reasons and more.

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:07 am

    140. Gennifer says:

My moms name is Judy. She loves to find people she used to know and reconnect. Even friends of us kids that we went to school with in 2 grade. I don’t know if these people remember her, but she gets a kick out of finding all about their lives when she finds them. Right now she’s planning a reunion of all her cousins who have not seen each other for many decades.

    141. Kristin Evans says:

My mom’s name was Ann. She passed away when I was 14. She was an incredible mom! A little known factoid is that she had a way with training dogs. Our dogs growing up always walked without a leash in the neighborhood and would hang out in the front yard never leaving the yard. I just thought that was the way dogs were till I got my own. Now I wonder what my mom did to train them while we were in school!

    142. Keryn says:

My mom’s name is LaDonna. She lived on a snowy farm in northern Utah until she was eight, and then the family moved to Las Vegas–where she has lived ever since. And she swears she will never ever move back to where it snows. But my sister and I–who both live in northern Utah now–keep having babies in the wintertime, so she still has to deal with it! Hee hee.

    143. Kathy says:

My mother’s name was Kathleen. Her nickname was Jackie because she was the baby of a family of ten girls. She used to say all her brothers were sisters.

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:14 am

    144. Ann says:

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:15 am

    145. Elizabeth says:

My mother’s name was Evelyn. She was born on St. Lucy’s Day. She was always cross that her baby sister was named Lucy, while she was stuck with a name she didn’t like! I called her “Mummy” and later,”Mum” –names which suited her much better.

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:22 am

    146. Robin M. says:

My mom’s name is Faye. Well, actually its Glenda Faye, but she always been called Faye. I’ve often wondered it was because of Glenda… the good witch. But, at least she was a good witch. My mom’s not a witch though. She is a middle child – with just a touch of that middle child syndrome. She is very crafty (good with crafts I mean) like flower arranging, jewelry making, sewing, etc.

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:23 am

    147. staci at laughing mommy says:

My mother’s name is Maris. (Sounds like Merris)

Her nickname is “Electronic Grandma”. She is very difficult to shop for because she is allergic to cosmetics and perfume, doesn’t typically wear jewelry, is not interested in home decorating or cooking.

This gadget would be perfect for her. She loves pictures and video.

      Thanks!

    148. Robinznest says:

My mom’s name is Audrey. She is going to be 72 years old this year. But she looks 60. And it’s all natural. I only hope I have her genes!

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:30 am

    149. momof8 says:

My mom’s name is Nellie. Back in the day when you could send home baked treats to school, she would mix up several batches of sugar cookie dough at Christmas. She would cut out, bake, frost, and decorate cookies for all four of us kids to take to our classes. Being a busy Mom, this baffles me. Even though we looked forward to it and loved it at the time, I am pretty sure we didn’t appreciate what it was she was doing! Especially with those dang aluminum cookie cutters that like to eat the dough!

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:31 am

    150. Fuzzy says:

My Mother’s name is Margaret, but everyone calls her Peggy. Her dad used to call her “Peg-o-my-heart” which I loved. She is the most amazing mother of 7, big hearted, patient, kind woman in the world, and I hope to be half of what she is. Although, she is only 5′ tall, so that would be interesting….

    151. Nelson's Mama says:

My Mom’s name is Janice, all the grandgirls call her Janny and now most of the adults do too!

She taught me to skinny dip when I was eight!

    152. SassyPants says:

Ooo, that lil toy looks like so much fun. I want one! So, about my Momma:
Susan – My mother is my hero. She raised me by working 3 jobs and still finding ways to make me feel like I was never alone. When I was in junior high she started a tradition with us that every Sunday morning before church we would sit on the couch with our cups of coffee and catch up. Thinking back to those mornings now always makes me weepy. How did she do it all?

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:44 am

    153. Joanna says:

My Mom’s name is Clodella. I’m pretty sure it’s some German name for nerves of steal or goes where angels fear. Even though she’s stubborn she’s also very creative – it’s disgusting.

    154. erica says:

    155. Plastic Daffodils says:

My mom’s name is Susan, and her middle name is Annette. For some reason, she hates her middle name and won’t tell it to anyone, but I like it. If I have a daughter I might give her the middle name of Annette, so she’ll have to like it.

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:59 am

    156. A&EMom says:

My mother’s name is Debi. I wouldn’t trade her for an other mom in the world. One of my mom’s most outlandish stories comes from her childhood. She and her older sister were playing “Princess and Witch” so my sweet mother made her dear sister a nasty brew to drink that included bleach. AND MY AUNT DRANK IT.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:04 pm

    157. Liss says:

My mom’s name is Becky. She is my ultimate role model – she homeschooled all three of us, directs the children’s ministry at het church, and was never too busy to remind me how much she loves me. Now that I’m a wife and mother, I know how hard she worked!!!

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

    158. Nicole says:

My mom’s name is Joan. She is a wonderful lady, we have a great time together. An intersting tidbit…my mom’s dad passed away when she was 7. Things were tight and her mom (my grandmother)and she moved into a small 2 bedroom house with my mom’s two brothers. Because there was only 2 bedrooms, my mom shared a bed with her mom until the day she got married. Since then she has shared a bed with my dad. I find it crazy to think that she has never had a room of her own, or a bed of her own!

    159. trixiefan says:

Melba – She is my aunt, but has been more like a mother to me than my own mother. She babysat my girls when they were little. She had has a tough life, but manages to usually put on a smile.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

    160. Mary B says:

My mother’s name is Mary. I was not named after her because she didn’t become my mother until I was 16 months old. She graciously took on the task of raising 4 motherless children plus 3 of her own when she married my dad. Today they celebrate their 37th anniversary.
I wish I knew my “real mom” her name was Janna but I am thankful God placed Mary in my dad’s life.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

    161. Kellye says:

My mom’s name is Loretta. And if she read your story about a grandmother who kidnapped grandkids, this would give her a good idea. She is very serious about the grandma business. In fact I do not know what happened to the woman that raised me.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:17 pm

    162. Janet Timpson says:

My mothers name was Bertha. Her sister kidnapped her because she did not like how my mother was living her life at the time. She took my mother to St. Louis.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:17 pm

    163. Confused Foreigner says:

My Mom’s name is Cora. She is the youngest in her family. Her mother started having kids at age 19 and finished with my mother at age 44. That makes an age gap of 25 years from youngest to oldest siblings.

Another cool fact is that my Mom and Dad learned to use the internet at age 69, when I first went overseas for an extended period of time. Now they can whiz around the internet like nobodies business.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

    164. Manda says:

My mom’s name is Donna. Her baby pictures and mine are almost identical, except hers are in black and white and mine are in color. When my daughter is born late this summer, I’ll be interested to see if her baby photos match mine and my mom’s.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

    165. NoMasNinos says:

My mom’s name is Sonia. She once waded through the Rio Grande while she was 7 months pregnant. Strong-willed as she is, she ignored my grandmothers call to return. My brother is now 31 years old.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

    166. Stephanie says:

My mothers name is Bonita. In the small town she grew up in everyone went by there first and middle name so her real name is Bonita Gail. Everytime we hear about someone named Bobby Joe, or Billy Bob, we always say they must be from Tahoka. My grandmother is Bonnie Mae and my aunt Betty Lou, they, surprise, are also from Tahoka.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

    167. Quirky says:

My mother’s name is Cindy, and she has the fabulous ability to plan things out and build them (furniture, decks, anything). She can just “see” how things work, and can not only build it but improve on it to fit her needs. When she was in school, she took an aptitude test that said that she would be a perfect shop teacher. She was very excited until she was informed that women were not allowed to take shop, much less teach it. Seems that in those days, women just weren’t “mechanically minded”. But Mom continued creating and building anyway, and taught us that you should never let someone tell you that you can’t do something that you love. Now I build and create things too.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

    168. Kacey says:

My Mom was Beatrice and she liked it so much that she named my oldest sister Beatrice. She wanted me to name my firstborn Beatrice, but I held out for Lesley. My other children have names that mean lovely, godly things, but poor Lesley — it means “from the gray fort”. I still like it better than Beatrice. I’ve read through all these comments and there are certainly some unusual names among these readers.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

    169. midlife mommy says:

My mother’s name was Rose, and I lost her last September. She was quite the talker, and though I wasn’t very close to her growing up, or in my 20′s, or in most of my 30′s, we did have the opportunity to become friends over the last eight years. I chose my cell phone provider based on the most amount of minutes I could buy for the least amount of money, so I could call her every day on the way home from work. We would talk for 45 minutes to an hour or more, depending on traffic. Once, while my mother was on a roll, the call dropped. I called back off and on for 15 minutes before I could get through to her (she didn’t have call waiting, so all I got was a busy signal). She literally talked for that long before she realized that I wasn’t there anymore. That was my mom!

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

    170. Gina Hill says:

My mom’s name is Joyce. She made and sold sock monkeys to put my dad through college. Hoo-ah!

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

    171. Beth Plemons says:

My mom’s name is Kay…one thing she used to do was sunbathe with MOTOR OIL!!! When she was young, she achieved dark tan results…I remember going camping when I was a kid and she tried out her good ole 10W/30, and recieved 2nd & 3rd degree burns! What in the world was she thinking?!! I have no idea where this plan came from in her younger days, but it definitely isn’t a good one!

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

    172. jodi says:

My mother’s name is Pam. She is terrified of throwing up, was born the night before Halloween and doesn’t remember her dreams. She is also the best grandmother I’ve ever met and I am frequently jealous of my children because they get to be grandparented by her.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:40 pm

    173. Sherri says:

My mother’s name is Sandi, but I want to talk about my Mother-in-Love Jeannene. When my first grandson was born I took the name Grandmother after my mom. When you take or give a name you honor the one who currently uses it. My mom is not a nice person and I constantly have to remind myself that I do not want to grow up to be like her. My M-I-Love is a wonderful example of family, love and total commitment. I changed my name to Mema to honor the woman that I most want to be like when I grow up.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:43 pm

    174. Marian says:

Mom’s name is Barbara. She was “Bobby” as a tomboy kid. She had a six-shooter toy pistol, and she knew how to use it.
Her grandmother should have been her aunt. You see, her grandfather came to this country to work, save, and prepare a home for his bride. When he sent to the “old country” for her to come, the girl’s father was not pleased that she was the second born, and the first born daughter was not married yet. So he sent her instead. Big surprise at the boat dock…

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:49 pm

    176. Lexi says:

My mom’s name is Caysie, and obviously people spell it wrong all the time! -but her “baptism name” (a Catholic thing? I dunno) is Catherine.

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

    177. Jenn C says:

I loved reading about everyone’s moms as well!

My precious mother’s name is Fay. She is a witty sort, and there are SO many factoids to share, it’d be hard to pick just one. But since you asked for ONE, I’ll chose one that is a treasure to me and is not necessarily a “fun” one, but an important one.

If ever a mother was like Jesus, my mom is. She has shepherded me (and my sister) with the most beautiful, sweet and pure love, and a better picture of Jesus I cannot find. If she read that sentence, she would blush and quietly say, “All the praise goes to Him.” She is one.amazing.lady. and I am one.blessed.girl.

Thanks for the give-away. I’m daily reader and occasional commenter, and I relate so well to your stories. I’m in Texas and at age 46 am TRYING to become an antique mommy! :)

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:52 pm

    178. Sarbear says:

My Mom’s name is DeAnn. She was named after her dad whose name is Dean. Her new passion/hobby the last few years is quilting

      April 30th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

    179. Jeanne A says:

      My mom’s name is Blanche.

People in my family love to can and freeze veggies and fruits grown in their gardens and purchased cheaply from local neighboring farms. In the process of freezing the item being frozen needs to be dipped into boiling water for a minute or two. This process is called Blanching. So from time to time, my brother make a pun and say “We need to ‘mom’ the beans.”

My mom is the best! All my life I have heard of her speak of all the wonderful things that God has provided for us–her family. She focuses on the positive. I wish I was more like her.

      April 30th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

    180. Katie H says:

My mother’s name is Susan, but everyone calls her “Sue.” She’s been a teacher for over 45 years! (40 of them in the same district.) We can go anywhere, and at least one person will come up to her and say, “You were my teacher! Do you remember me?” She’ll always say, “Refresh my memory, what’s your name…of course I remember you!” So very, very sweet and generous a woman you’ll ever find. My moms name is Shelly. Het mom grew up as the oldest child of 9 kids. So she became the 2nd mamma. So when it was her turn to have children she only had one so she could spoil her rotten.I don’t think my mom even knew how to wash a dish when she got married. That must have made for some interesting years!

    182. Morgan says:

My mother’s name is Rebecca. She goes by “Bec Bec” to my boys since she is not “old enough” to be called granny or grandmother. :) I love my mom dearly. When I was a senior in highschool, I looked forward to the day when I wouldn’t live in her house any more. But now that I’m a mother myself, my mother has become my best friend. We talk on the phone at least once a day, and she is such an inspiration to me. She always encourages me and gives me Christian counsel, which is so desperately needed in this life we live!! I could never replace my mother- she is God’s gift to me!

    187. canadacole says:

Oh AM, I am having almost as much fun reading all of these as I would if I won that camera!

My mother’s name is Nola. She was a high-risk pregnancy and neither she nor her mother were expected to live through the delivery, so no one bothered with names. When they both survived the neighbours held a baby shower. Everyone put their favourite name in a hat and then a first and middle name were drawn. Marjorie was actually drawn first and Nola second, but her mother hated the name so she switched them on the birth certificate: Nola Marjorie.

Okay, so I had this great comment all typed up and it disapeared somewhere in the world wide web. Let’s try this again.

My Mom’s name is Susie or Susan. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, had a double mastectomy and just finished her chemo treatments. She is a wonderful example to all of those around her. Her faith has remained strong and her attitude is great.

I would love to win this and give it to her as a gift for Mother’s Day! She would use it for taking little videos of the grandkids or family events!

My mom’s name is Marlene, and my dad often called her Mar. She was born in a farmhouse in rural Minnesota, and although that was in 1943, her family did not get indoor plumbing until she was in the 12th grade! She remembers milking cows by hand, outhouses, driving a tractor…

My mom’s name is Miriam. She was the 6th of ten children (5 of each). I’m so proud of her for standing by my dad after he confessed 30 years of living a double life of addiction. As he’s committed to recovery, she’s committed to him. What a woman!

      April 30th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

    192. Suzanne says:

My mother’s name is Rosalea. She doesn’t have a middle name. When she was born, her mother was very sick and she was out of it for three days. They had to fill out a birth certificate before she woke up, so my mother’s aunt named her… intending to name her Rosa Lee but it was written on the certificate as Rosalea. Personally I like Rosalea much better anyway.

      My mom’s name is Julie
She has the most wonderful ability to tell a story. She always gets the same look on her face when she is about to say something especially interesting. She is one of four and had a hard childhood, but she has never given me anything but the best.

      April 30th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

    195. Dee Anne says:

My mother’s name is Emma Anne. She was born in Alabama and girls were typically called by both their first and middle names. Well, in rural Alabama, Emma is pronounced Emmer and she didn’t like that! SO, I guess at some point when she had a say, she declared that her name would just be Anne. And by the way…both of her sisters go by their middle names as well!

      April 30th, 2008 at 1:39 pm

    196. Susan says:

My mom’s name is Jeanne. She grew up in a small town in Iowa and I spent my summers visiting her parents there. She had an amazing childhood in a time and place where one could bike all over town, walk to the library and meet a bunch of friends at the city pool for a swim in the summer. Oh, and every day at noon she roller skated home for lunch. One day when she was visiting my niece (her first grandchild), my niece stood up in her crib and called out “Mommo” and pointed to my Mom. She has been “Mommo” ever since.

    201. Cherise says:

My mom’s name is Sherilyn. She has been a preacher’s wife for almost 41 years. She loves all things NASCAR, Elvis and family. My mom is hilarious. People think that she is reserved…until they get to know her. When I was in junior high, we were stopped at a gas station to use the bathroom. My mom went in first and when she came out she told me not to buy the gum in there because it taste like rubber. When I went in I saw a condom machine on the wall.

      April 30th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

    202. Sarah at themommylogues says:

My mom’s name is Mary. She was born in 1946, but still grew up without running water in rural Minnesota. That’s got to be a cold trip to the outhouse in January! I guess my grandpa always said, “We’ve got running water. Mary runs out to get it,” or something like that. She takes care of my 2 girls every Thursday so I can catch up on work and run errands, and delights herself in spoiling them. I always know she’s trying to push my buttons when she says, “Do you know any little girls who…” Like when it was followed by “love to eat Hot Tamales” when my daughter was maybe 1. Also, when I was in sixth or seventh grade my mom was the interim pastor at our church for a year or so. It’s sort of different to be a PK because of your mom!

      April 30th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

    203. Chesley says:

My mom’s name is Debbie. She’s a mother to 4 wonderful (if I do say so myself!) children. No great facts, just something funny.. she always tries to sing along to songs that she doesn’t know the words to. My son who is almost 3 inherited this trait!

Coincidentally, my mother’s name is Vivian too. And her real first name was Marie-Jean but for some reason everyone called her ‘Viv’ for her middle name. And I too should be doing other things like vacuuming but here I sit, reading about people’s moms!

      April 30th, 2008 at 2:27 pm

    205. Jennifer says:

      Coooool camera!
My mother’s name is Janice. Jan for short. Interesting factiods: we both have a scar from a wart that was removed from the exact same finger, in the exact same spot. Eeeeew! Warts are such a lovely thought. We also have a chicken pox scar in the same place on our back. DNA is an amazing thing! One more crazy thing: I am the second daughter of a second daughter of a second daugher of a second daughter! And we all had 2 girls!

      April 30th, 2008 at 2:56 pm

    206. Meredith says:

My mom’s name is Marsha. Not Marcia or Marshall or ma’am. She likes to tell the story of her father telling her not to worry if she ever was kidnapped; they’d bring her back in the morning light. She really is lovely. I look just like her!

My mom is Becky. (My grandmother was Vivian, actually named Vivian, and everyone called her Viv. I miss her, even after 19 years.)

Fun factoid – when my mom was a baby, Paul Newman and his first wife lived down the street and they occasionally babysat for my grandma.

My Mom came every day to help me after breast cancer surgery and through chemo and radiation – she helped me so much, the kids were 3 and 5 at the time, I don’t think I will ever be able to say thank you enough for all of her love and care for us!!

    212. Shalee says:

My mom, Cora Lee, makes the best batch of lasagna in the world… well she used to until my dad retired and got into the kitchen. Now she says that his is way better.

Other tidbit, we looked so alike when I was in high school that often we were mistaken for each other from the back. Then one of us would turn around and the truth was revealed. My mom loved these mistaken identities. I did not. (When you’re 14, who wants to be mistaken for a 40 year old?!)

      April 30th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

    213. Amber says:

My mothers name is Edith and she is an amazing woman! This little lady is my best friend there is not a day that goes by that she doesn’t hear I love you from me. I would be lost with out her! facts: We look like sisters instead of mother and daughter and I have her hands. There strong but have a womanly delicatness about them. She loves to be creative.

    218. Melene says:

My Mom’s first name is June. Her middle name is Melene and so is her Mom’s and her Grandmother’s. She gave it to me as a middle name ( and the name I go by ) and I gave it my first daughter as her middle name. It sounds like Melanie. By the way, her grandchildren call her Mo. It was my Mom’s idea.

      April 30th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Beverly. She has a hobby of eBay, selling women’s clothes (mostly awful gaudy clothing, in my opinion, but people pay buckeroos for them!)

      April 30th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

    221. Stephanie says:

My mom’s name is Eileen. The funny story I have to tell on my mom was the time we were all supposed to eat Sunday dinner at her house. My mom is the ultimate after church lunch hostess (always really good homecooked food with all the fixings, all organized ahead of time – she is really awesome). It was the Sunday of our first born’s dedication and my husband’s family was all visiting and invited to lunch. We got there before she did and got all the side dishes going to help her. She got home and realized that she had forgotten to turn on the oven and that the turkey (the only meat) was still raw as could be. My dad and dh made a quick run to Kentucky Fried Chicken and saved the day, but she still gets embarassed over that one (he he)…. She is a wonderful hospitable lady. She is a blessing to so many – I hope to be like her one day =)

    224. Janera says:

My mama’s name is Era, and she and my daddy named all of us kids with a name that started with “J” so I’m named after her. Janera.

When I was a kid, nobody on the face of the earth had the same name as me. Now? Lots of ‘em.

      April 30th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

    225. Jan says:

My mom’s name is Helen, and she was the youngest of 10 children with a 25-yr span between the oldest and the youngest. She grew up with immigrant parents in a 2-bedroom, 1-bath house. As a baby, she was nick-named Tootie by her siblings, and those who are alive still call her that. My husband nick-named her “Hell-ion” when we were first married (and he was slightly afraid of her!), but has never called her that to her face! I do think it suits her personality, though, because although she may be shy in social situations, she will fight to the death for any of us kids… I love my mom!

      April 30th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

    226. Dawn in NC says:

My mom’s name is Hattie Bob.

Her real name is Gladys (with a childhood family “funny” nickname of Happy Bottom…get it?…say Gladys very slowly.) Anyway, her uncle was one of the doctors on staff where she was born and said he didn’t care what she was named officially but that she was going to be called Hattie after his mother and Bob after him…so 63 years later, she’s still Hattie Bob.

She is the best Mom and Mimi in the world, she waited 10 yrs along with us(my husband and I) to be a Mimi, with 3 grandsons in heaven and finally a granddaughter here on this earth. Through God’s great intervention we are awaiting another granddaughter in August!

My mom’s name is Jeannine. She has the incredible gift of being able to laugh at herself, which is a good thing, because she is famous for totally messing up quotes and every day vernacular. 231. Sandra says:

My mom’s name is Dahlia and she has something against clowns. San Antonio has a couple of weeks of “Fiesta” festivities every year and apparantly when she was a kid, she made the mistake of sitting on the first row to watch one of the parades and a clown snatched her up and forced her to dance on the street with him; and for weeks after that people recognized her whenever she went out in public as the kid who danced with the clown. I hear this story every. single. year we go to the parade. She now warns the grandkids to beware of the clowns.

    233. Cynthia says:

My mother’s name is Pauline although she goes by Polly. She’s been married to Joe for 56 years and her heart is breaking right now because she had to put him in a nursing home. She told me that every night before bed he would say ‘I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.’ The first day we visited him in the nursing home I got her wheelchair as close to the bed as I could and she took his hand and told him she loved him. He almost smiled and said, ‘a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.’ Each day he says less. Yesterday he didn’t recognize me at all.

      April 30th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

    234. Cheryl says:

My mom, first name Rose Ann (yes, she has a middle name too) had no dad- he was killed when she was 2. In that car accident her mother almost died and mom broke both legs and her collarbone. She has survived cervical cancer and 2 hip replacements.

The one thing I think she hasn’t forgiven me for (sort of kidding) is moving to France and taking her only grandkids overseas when we came to Europe as missionaries. We see her once (maybe twice) a year and it would be nice to be able to send videos.

      April 30th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

    235. Kay says:

My mom’s name is Betty. When I was growing up she was affectionately known by all my brothers’ and sister’s friends as “The Bet”. She has mellowed quite a bit since we were teenagers. “The Bet” was my mom with her game face on. In other words…. you didn’t misbehave at our house. Everyone was crazy about her but they were also on their best behavior cause she wouldn’t put up with it. Trust me….she needed “a game face” for all of us!

Today she is known by my kids and my nieces and nephews as Gran. ( I mentioned she has mellowed, right?) I think this is really lovely and something to look forward to as there are days “I have my game face on” with my own children and think— ah, one day….I’ll get to be a “Gran”.

My mom’s name is Carol, which is also my middle name.

Mom is crafty. She once made a beautiful creche scene with Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus out of two Ivory® Liquid bottles, some styrofoam balls, dowels, a bunch of old sewing scraps and a couple cans of gold spraypaint. Jesus’s hair was made of Brillo®. And yes, I do still think Mom will go to Heaven even though she gave Baby Jesus a steel wool Afro.

      Here’s a whole post I wrote about my mom. She’s a hoot.

My mom’s name is Martha, and I don’t think she particularly liked her name much, but when she became a grandmother, she got to be “GranMartha” which we all think is very cute and much more hip-sounding than “Granny” and all its variations.

My mother’s first name is Jeanne and she graduated from high school when she was 15. Her high school was the one where they filmed Reefer Madness (really) and in her yearbook beside her picture it says “Jeanie XXXXXXX is our pal, she wants to be a glamour gal.” She went on to be second runner up in the Miss New York contest, my mom the glamour gal. She went to Vassar and then to Stanford for grad school and became a professional costumer for NBC and then 20th Century Fox. She did the costumes for A King and I and the Loretta Young Show.

Whew! Look at all those potential winners!

My mother’s name is Ihnsook but years back when she used to be a hairdresser, a customer told her that her name was difficult to pronounce and named her “Susie”. She now goes by Susie to everyone except her family members. Check her out at susiespetals.com

    248. moraviancookie says:

My mother’s name is Dorothy (“Dot”). She was 37 when her youngest child was born (me). And I was 37 when my firstborn child was born! Anyway, I did not realize that she was an “older” mom until I was a teenager. She was always so creative, a homemaker and an artist. She had so much energy! Over the last 10 years she has slowed down due to the onset of Alzhiemer’s. She now resides in a memory unit/facility in Alabama. Her birthday is actually tomorrow. She will be 81. Happy Birthday Mom!!!

    249. Jaime says:

My mom’s name is Barbara. She was the 5th child out of 6 – spread over almost 20 years! Therefore, she grew up closer to my cousins than to some of her siblings. It’s made her a little nutty in the organizational department, but she’s really good at it.

      April 30th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

    250. Kimberly says:

My mom’s name is Karlynn, because my grandfather’s name is Karl. They pronounce it “Carlin”. A fun fact about my mom is that she chose her university based on the fact that they had a great “Junior Year Abroad” program and she knew that she wanted to travel. She had a fabulous time, except that that was the year JFK was assassinated and she was one of only four Americans at the University of Glasgow at the time.

My Mum’s name is Christel. She’s incredibly creative. She quilts, knits, does needle-point, etc., etc. She took over the tradition of knitting socks for the family (mainly the men, but I wear them, too) from her mother. She’s always got a pair in the works. This year, she knitted matching mother & daughter socks for my new daughter (Vivian, by the way :) and me. She’s such a wonderful Mum, Grandma and person!

My mom’s name is Lupe. Usually its a nickname for Guadalupe but they put Lupe on her birth certificate. Her birthday was yesterday. 63 and going strong despite having diabetes, kidney failure, 2 heart attacks and having a leg amputated.

      She’s my inspiration!

Thanks for giving me a chance to talk about her. :)

    254. Nett says:

My Mom’s name is Janie, and no it’s not a “cutsie shortsie” for Jane. It really is Janie. My oldest started calling her Mimi and she loves it instead of Grandma. She’s too hip to be called “grandma”.

Interesting fact: Hmmmm, well, she’s a really great impersonator of Andy Griffith. Years and years ago he recorded stories on LP’s and she memorized them and re-recorded herself saying them on tape. I used to listen to them and it still makes me laugh:):)

    255. Lundie says:

My mom’s name is Marcia Celeste.

Fun facts – 1) She’s a card carrying member of MENSA (which my dad lovingly and laughingly gives her grief over) and 2) My grandfather played the pipe organ and named her after the organ stop by the same name.

    256. Susan says:

My mom’s name is Helen Jo. Her mom’s name was Helen and her daddy’s name was Joseph.

My mom died 18 months ago and we miss her like nobody’s business. She was an absolute hoot when we were growing up! She didn’t like sweets and rarely baked for us, but all the other kids’ moms did…so when we came home from school one day, Mom had placed Oreos on a cookie sheet and talked about how she’d been baking….my brother asked if he could have one, and she told him touch one to see if they’d cooled off yet!! We enjoyed those cookies and my brother told his friends at school that “my mom makes Oreos from SCRATCH!!!”!

    257. Kat Bryan says:

My mother’s name is Katherine Naomi but her family calls her “Nome”. Everyone else calls her Katherine. She’s one of 11 children and got married at 16. Some of her great-grandchildren call her Grandma Great to distiguish between her and their grandma.

My mom’s name is Catherine, though her family calls her Katrina. The priest wouldn’t baptise her Katrina, but it is what her family, especially my grandfather, calls her to this day.

    259. Ann Babenco says:

My Mom was Margaret Ann….(everyone called her Peggy)
She was devoted to her birds. Growing up we had 2 Amazon Parrots, A Myna Bird, a miniature green parrot, and a Cockatiel….
She always wanted a McCaw but Dad’s position was “no way, no more birds”….

    260. Abby says:

My mom’s name is Melinda Sue, but most people call her Lindy.

She grew up on a small farm in Kansas, when she was little she had pet raccoons and took them to show and tell at school. Since becoming a mom last year I have truly learned what motherly love feels like and we have become so much closer because we share that bond now.

    264. cmaxwell says:

My Mom’s name is Thelma. She doesn’t have a middle name, so she’s always used her maiden name instead. When she was pregnant with me, she got really sick and the doctors told her she would have the medicine she needed would kill me, so she refused to take it. They told her without it, we’d both likely die. She still refused to take it. Thankfully, she lived to give birth to a whopping 9 pound 9 ounce bundle of eternal gratefulness. :)

When I was still just a baby, her & my Dad took in my 4 cousins that were homeless. I don’t know how they managed that with me & me 2 older siblings during rough financial times, but they did. To this day, one of those cousins calls Mom “Aunt Mom” and still treats me like his little sister.

Mom spent a lot of time volunteering in our small community where I grew up. She became interested in first aid. Started taking some basic courses, got others interested, and eventually her & a few others managed to secure enough donations to buy an old hearse that they converted into an ambulance. With the nearest hospital nearly 15 miles away (and it was a small community one at that) and no 9-1-1 system in place (this was in the 70s), it was a really good thing for the community.

She never slowed down either. She started teaching basic first aid classes to anyone that would attend, and also furthered her learning by obtaining her EMT license. She had to drive 150 miles roundtrip frequently to accomplish this. Still not satisfied, she & the other volunteers undertook a major fund raiser, and were able to finally purchase a fully equipped, REAL ambulance.

All of this while working full-time and raising a family, I guess you understand why I think so much of her, and count myself truly blessed.

One last thing, she has spent years tracing our family tree, and us tracked back a really long way. She has taken all of her research, and included lots of funny family things and made scrapbooks for all of her kids, grandkids & great grandkids.

    266. Jenna says:

My mom’s name is Lisa. She takes a Latin dance exercise class called Zumba and has recruited half the ladies in her small town to join in, as well as talked her 75-year-old mother into signing up for classes.

    267. Nancygrayce says:

My mother’s name is Margaret and my dad called her Greta, pronounced Greeta. Her mother’s name was Palestine and HER mother’s name was Hasseltine. Thankfully mama decided not to incorporate any grandparent names with the 6 of us!

    268. TaunaLen says:

My mother’s name is Carlene. She’s the most amazing woman I know. She lost her mom a few weeks ago, so this mother’s day will be tough for her to get through. I’m hoping we can make it a happy one.

Fun factoid: At a young age, she assigned all numerals a gender. She still views numerals as either male or female, though she cannot really explain why. I can’t explain it either, but I love it!

    269. Johannah B says:

My mothers name was Margaret – as was one of my sisters and my niece – all who died way before their time, Mom at 69, Sis at 61 and my Niece at just 41. My mother used to say she was the 7th. child of the 7th generation and as such had special powers, where she just knew things ahead of them actually happening. I was married 6.5 years before I became pregnant, but I didn’t get to tell anyone as my mother had already done it by the time I found out!!

    271. Carol ~ I Throw Like A Girl says:

My sweet mom’s name is Marianne. She has no middle name at all. Her parents were from Italy, so I am surprised she didn’t have several middle names. People are always trying to spell it Mary Ann, but if you knew her you would know that Marianne just fits her.

      April 30th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

    272. Susan says:

My mother’s name was Margaret, but her nickname (a common one for Margaret) was Peggy. She said that, when she was born, the only positive thing her aunt said to her mother was, “Well, she DOES have nice ears, Alma.” As if a person couldn’t find a better thing to say about a darling little infant!

She laughed about that for years, though. (And fortunately her nice ear genes were passed down to her children and grandchildren.)

    273. MommyWizdom says:

My mom’s first name was Olga but for some reason, everyone called her Elena, which was her middle name. When my daughter was born my mother wanted to be her first word uttered, so she dubbed herself Abi. My daughter’s first word was banana (nana), not Abi. But the name stuck. And ever since I’m having to explain who Abi is…

Thanks for the chance to win! I LOVE contests!!

    274. Colleen says:

My mom’s name is Jane. She played basketball in high school, and still has the moves years later. Whether helping move livestock, challenging us to a pick up game, or chasing a grandchild, Mom has always played great defense, and nothing gets past her!

    276. Linda says:

Wilma is a wonder. She is 85. When she had her knees replaced, and I stayed with her for a few days, she would walk around the house for exercise, as I laid on the living room sofa. She would bring me Ding Dongs and Diet Cokes after making a pass through the kitchen. Wilma rocks.

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

    277. AliAnn says:

My mom’s name is Susan. When I was in middle and high school, she was the youth director at our church and I loved it! I never went through that embarrassed to be seen with mom thing, and we had tons of fun together. Since then, she mostly works with younger children teaching Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She’s also the greatest Grammy ever!

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

    278. Jackie says:

My mother’s name is Phyllis. She has a twin brother named Phillip. Their nicknames within the family are Sister and Sonny. So my cousins call her Aunt Sister and we call my uncle Uncle Sonny.

Once we were at a carnival at a Catholic church and my grandmother was yelling at mom to slow down and wait for her. Mamaw yelled, in a very rude sounding voice, “Sister would you wait for me.” All heads turned to see who was being disrespectful to the nuns.

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

    279. Sue says:

One of my mother’s names is Louise. She is such a good Christian example. A fun fact is she used to have an old-fashioned bicycle that she and her sister would ride to town, then park outside of town because they were embarrassed because it had the big tire on the front. Too bad she doesn’t have it now to sell!

    281. Sherri Edman says:

My mom’s name is Melba. When she was a year old, she went over to visit my Great Aunt Sis (real name: “Melissy”) for the day. While she was there, her two year old cousin, Donnie, fed her some rat poison. For some reason Aunt Sis didn’t mention this to my Granny.

The next day, Granny was chatting with Aunt Sis on the phone, and said, “I can’t understand it– Melba had just got to where she was walking real good, but today she’s just staggering around.”

“Huh,” said Aunt Sis, “Maybe it was the rat poison she ate yesterday.”

Granny hung up the phone and took off for the hospital, where the doctor said if my mom wasn’t dead already, the poison wasn’t going to kill her. What it did do was make all her curly blond hair fall out. It grew back a straight, thick dark brown. Mine is just like it.

    282. Cheryl says:

My Mom’s name is Marilyn. When she was 14 (in 1956) she was a car hop at a drive-in in Norfolk, NE. After she graduated from high school, she left Nebraska on a Greyhound bus with just six dollars in her pocket. She didn’t even have a seat on the bus…she had to sit on the floor! She made it all the way to California, where she met and married my Dad…who, oddly enough, was also from Nebraska!!!

    283. Jill says:

      Oh, I sooo need this.

Mom’s name Janet. You should know that she keeps her pinkie toe corssed over the one that didn’t have any roast beef. She thinks this is really comfortable and doesn’t like it the other way. She doesn’t do this in shoes cause I am pretty sure that would hurt, but she does it in sandals and when barefoot.

You should also know that this year she is turning 60 and decided to train for and run a marathon. She is my hero.

      April 30th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

    286. Trina says:

My mom’s name is Patricia. She is a fabulous cook, and I remember having the best meals while I was growing up. I love to cook, and always thought I got the “cooking gene” from her. Only recently I learned she hates cooking. Always has. She said she cooked because she was a stay-at-home mom, and what else was she supposed to do? She says I got my love of cooking from her father, my gradfather – he was a professional chef. Oh well, the gene skipped a generation.

    288. Sarah S. says:

OMGsh!! Am I comment 288?? You can’t possibly read all of these! Man — sorry I’ve been out and about all day and missed all the fun!

My mom’s name is Mignon — pronounced just like the fillet. I love that her name is unique, and am a little sad I didn’t name my daughter that. However, she did have a sub in high school that pronounced it ‘Imogene’. Bless. 45 years later, a guy she went to high school still calls her that because it totally cracks him up.

She has literally hundreds of verses of scripture committed to memory, and she will not stop. She rocks.

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

    289. ChristyCate says:

My mom’s name is Lillie. She was named after her mother Lillie who was named after her mother Lillie. (Notice the trend stopped with Mom.) We live 800 miles apart and don’t really look like each other, but she’s one of my best friends and we talk on the phone EVERY day.

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

    290. Jennifer says:

My mom’s name is Laura. Growing up my grandfather called her Lolly, so when my first daughter was born, my sisters decided thats what her grandmother name would be. It is so fitting for such a fun, hip grandmother.

Also-second from begin a mom/Lolly, her dream job is to be a private investigator.

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

    291. Emily says:

Teryl Lee. No one knows where Teryl came from, and Lee was the name of her grandfather who abandoned her mother and aunt when my grandma was 2. She cannot figure out WHY her mom would name her daughter after her father after all that! Her maiden initials were TLC, and that pretty much sums up her personality–she is a caretaker through and through, and I’m blessed that she is my mother! She hates chocolate, though–how is that possible???

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

    292. deb says:

My mother’s name is Mildred Kathleen, but she is known as Katie. She is tiny, petite and every inch the personification of a LADY and of Godliness. She is a fabulous cook and the Queen of desserts. Though by nature she is very quiet, her actions speak volumes of love to her husband of 57 years, her daughters, sons-in-love, grandsons and a great-grandson.

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

    293. Jen C. says:

My mom’s name is Sharon. Fun fact: She cries at parades…I only found that out a couple of years ago. She is wonderful always putting her kids/grandkids first and she is so proud of all of us. She has 3 beautiful granddaughters. Thanks mom!

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

    294. Cindy V says:

My mom’s name was Bernice. She was the nicest person I’ve ever met. She passed away 7 years ago and I think of her every day. She loved me well. Lucky for me I married a man that has the same sweet nice spirit that mom had. God must have known how much I needed that sweetness in my life.

    297. Betty G. says:

My Mom was named Edith. No middle name. She was #5 of 8 children. Her mother died when Mom was 7 and the 4 youngest kids were put into an orphanage. Not a fun place. HOWEVER, Mom was THE BEST MOM in the WORLD. She was so loving and caring and so happy to have a family to call her own. I was the baby of the family of 3 kids.
Unfortunately, she died at age 59 in 1977 of liver cancer. I miss her every day and have now lived half of my life without her.

I would love to win that FLIP to video my 13 grandchildren. (Latest one born 4-8-08) Thanks for sharing this gift with one of your “fans.”

    298. Deanna says:

My mother’s name was Joyce Darlene, but went by Doni for most of her life. The story goes, her German grandparents had a meat market in Baldwin Park, California during WWII. They could not have a watch dog, because of the obvious dangers of hungry dogs in a meat market. Instead they had a goose, named Donald. The goose would ‘honk’ whenever someone came in the store while my great-grandparents were in the back preparing meat. Apparently, mom couldn’t say ‘Donald’ when she was small and it came out ‘Doni’!

      April 30th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

    299. Abbi says:

My mom’s name is Mary Lou and she is seriously the world’s best gravy maker. (as in the kind that goes with roast beef or chicken, or fried pork chops, as was the case today.) Everything she makes is good, actually. And she loves us and her grandkids too. She’s a wonderful lady!

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

    300. Paulla says:

My mom’s maiden name was Judith Paulla Carey. Even though she went by “Judy”, her mother was afraid she would be called “Paul” for short, so they put two “ls” in Paulla – as if that would deter the “Paul” callers.

When my mom married my dad, she became Judith Paulla Carey Rich. She named her kids (me and my brother) Paulla and Carey. Many, many years later, she and my dad divorced and she went back to Judith Carey. Now, her friends think I am Paulla Carey and my brother is Carey Carey.

All I know is that I wish I had a name spelled with just one “l”.

      The end.

    301. Kim says:

My Mom’s name is Wrethal –
she was named after a town in Germany – when my grandmother was pregnant with her, my grandaddy was in Germany with the War – and she told him it was a girl and asked what he wanted to name her and his response was Wrethal as a joke, and my g/mother loved it –
She has worked with social services and recently retired -

    302. Tammy/Photography for Fun says:

My mom’s name is Janice (or MeMaw to her grandkids). She loved the time my daughter accidentally called her Mapa (my dad was always papa), but my daughter refused to ever call her Mapa again. Later on another grandchild named her MeMaw and it stuck. Her brothers all call her “Katydid” or Kacky Kate (her middle name is Kay.)

      April 30th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

    303. Tricia Hicks says:

My Mother’s name was Margie, and she is in Heaven now. The family was called to the hospital the day after she had surgery to have her leg amputated. The infection that caused her to have to have her leg amputated had spread throughout her body and she was not going to make it. She was in a coma, but they told us that she probably could hear us. I was unsure of her salvation so I crawled up in the bed with her and spoke a very simple prayer and asked her to squeeze my hand if she understood. I wish I could tell you that she did squeeze my hand but sadly, she did not. My best friend who was in the room also told me afterward that she had spoken with my Mother about her salvation and that my Mother had told her that she had been saved as a small child. I was so relieved! Not exactly a fun factoid, but a happy one.

    304. cyn says:

My mom IS THE GREATEST mom EVER….
I just had to start with that! :)
Her name is Nancy Carolyn. My Grandpa wanted to name her Victory Caroline b/c she was born days after WWII ended. Grandma didn’t care much for “Vicki” so they named her after her Aunt Nancy. They meant to give her the middle name Caroline but mispelled it…so she is forever known by her old southern relatives as Nancy Carolyn.

My mom’s name is Valerie and she is a wonderful caring woman with an extreme need for order. She changes the sheets the same day EVERY week, vacumns the same day every week, drinks her hot water out of the same mug (one mug got broken after 7 years, the poor woman didn’t quite know what to do:))
She takes a lot of ribbing about this need for order but handles it the way she handles everything in life, with grace and class.
      Just don’t hide her mug:)

The video was hilarious. I first chuckled at your struggle over whether to use “who” or “whom”. I share in that struggle-never quite sure which to use.

Further laughter ensued when the video began to shake as you laughed nervously at Sean’s declaration of the rule breakers getting shot. Did it concern you at all with the seriousness with which he declared that? Just kidding! It was hilarious, seriously.

Okay, my mom’s first name is Eula (yoo-luh), emphasis on first syllable. I finally realized why my own daughter was such a handful to raise when my mom shared a story with me one day of something she did when she was a youngster.

Mom’s family lived on a farm, and she knew she had chores to do when she got home from school each day. Thinking she was pretty clever, she invited a friend home after school (without her mom’s permission). She was just sure her mom would let her out of her chores since the classmate/friend was there. It didn’t work. My Nanny (Mom’s mom) made Mom do her chores anyway, which that day included weeding the garden.

My mom was mad at her mom, and figured she’d get even. She went out to the garden and cut down every single tomato plant, then stuck the stalks back into the ground (not sure what her thinking was there). I do believe she got the whipping of her life over that one!

My mother’s name is Beverly. When we were kids and living on a show string budget, she’d ocassionally wake us up at about 3 am and we’d jump into the car and head to the beach which was a four-five hour drive. We’d arrive in time to get a decent parking spot and breakfast on the NJ boardwalk and then spend the day on the beach. We’d leave after dinner.

      I have two mother figures.
My birth mother’s name was Barbara. She died when I was a year and 1/2. Therefore, she can do no wrong and is forever thought of as an angel.
My Aunt Jay Lauren is my earth mother. All of her siblings have some derivative of her father’s name James Laurence. She has always wished for a classic name with an obvious gender. She has received mail for years to Mr. Jay, or written to Joy or Gay.
Jay is very smart and proves it on Soduko, Crosswords, card games, Scrabble, and while watching Jeapordy.

Fun factoid…hmmm…when she came out to visit me when I lived in Washington, DC, she started conversations with complete strangers. In traffic. I kid you not. She also struck up small talk on the Metro. No one talks to each other on the Metro. Ever. Unless they are crazy bums. Or they are my mother. My favoritest mother ever!!! :-)

By the way, that video is AWESOME! I think your son and mine were cut from the same cloth.

    315. Kaci S. says:

      My mom’s name is Pattie.

She was supposed to be Cheri Lynn, but upon birth her father said she didn’t look like a Cheri Lynn so he named her Pattie Lou. When they brought my mother to her mother, my grandmother told them they had the wrong child. Then my grandfather explained everything. Twenty years later, my cousin was born and is appropriately named Cheri Lynn. My mother never asked her father why he chose Pattie Lou – I think she was afraid of the answer!

And she slept in her crib until she was 6…not because they didn’t have anything else but because she still fit. She was only 36 inches tall when she started kindergarten.

My mom’s middle name is Esther. It was the name of her aunt — the really grouchy one that complained that if you never came to visit, but complained when you did come because it wasn’t often enough, and on and on. My mom really hates her middle name.

Thankfully, my dad had an aunt Esther that was very sweet. My mom really liked her. So it took a bit of the sting from the name :)

To pp cyn… my mom’s one and only sister was named Nancy (she was my favorite and I miss her dearly). AND my 4 yr old dd is named Victory :)

My mom has went on to be with the Lord, but what I miss most is that she could whip out a comeback line like no ones business. If you made a funny comment or sarcastic remark, she would throw you a zinger in no time flat, she was VERY fast witted! Boy, do I miss the laughter.

You know how most of you can go to your mom when you’re mad at someone and your mom will ALWAYS take your side? Not my mom. Ever. She always delights in pointing out how the other person has a point and how I could have done things differently. It drives me crazy! But she’s 72 now and her health isn’t what it was any more. And when she’s gone, I’ll miss her something fierce. And know that she’s up there somewhere dying to tell me what I should have said at her funeral.

Maybe I could use this to video her house and send it in. Somehow I think she would write me out of her will(maybe because she has said those words)…but that’s okay since all I’ll inherit is all her STUFF! Thanks so much for your great giveaways!

My mom’s name is Jan (please don’t call her Janet!). When she was a little girl, she wore her long hair in two braids. My Grandmother worked so my great-aunt would get my mom and her sister ready for school which meant it was her responsibility to braid the long hair. Not without much howling and bawling by my mom. This resulted in my great-aunt threatening to “hack off those braids” if she did it again. She (my mom) did it again. And she (my great-aunt)hacked them off and sent her to school that way. My Grandmother wasn’t very happy when she got home and I don’t think my mom was either. BTW, that great-aunt is now almost 106 years old (in Sept.) and doing great.

Those are some of my best memories ever – and I’m so glad I got to share them with my mother. She is truly a wonderful woman and the reason I am who I am today. She’d strike up conversations on a dime and we’d have to ask afterwards … “did you know that man?”

Real name is Susan, but at that time in India, all girls’ names would have “amma” tacked on at the end if you are born in a high caste family (look up caste system in India if you are unfamiliar with this). Amma in my language means mother. So when little girls were born at that time, they will have mother at the end of their names.

    348. Deena says:

My mother’s first name is Pauline. My grandmother’s family brokered an arranged marriage and my mother was the 2nd child born from that union. This was in China. My grandmother was a strong-willed young lady (especially for old China) and decided that the arranged marriage was not working for her. So she took my mother who was just an infant/toddler at the time (leaving her oldest daughter with her husband) and left…to attend college…thereby shaming my grandmother’s family. My grandmother proceeded to leave my mother at various french convents in China for french nuns to care for her while my grandmother put herself through college. The french nuns gave my mother her western name…Pauline. Also…the french nuns did not provide my mother with instruction on how to correctly use chopsticks…so much to my father’s dismay (embarrassment), my mother does not use chopsticks correctly despite that fact that she was born and raised in China (and later Taiwan). Wow…there’s more to this story…but I’ll stop here.

My mom’s name is Terri Lee. She always hated her name because both her first and middle names could be “boy names”.

When my mom was pregnant with me, after trying for 6+ years to have a baby, she started to bleed. She found herself in the bathtub praying to God to let her keep the baby she’d wanted for so long. Then she started bargaining. She told God if he’d let her keep me, she’d convert to Catholicism like my dad had been wanting her to do.

It all went downhill from there. :) Hopefully I was worth it!

They were basically unhurt so they went ahead and saw the movie-and she never (to this day) told her mom (my granny Norma) about it! She figured she was fine, so why worry her? lol..that’s my mom.

My mom’s first name is Vicky, but she goes by her middle name, Lynn. Which she shared with me. My mom taught me the true value of dessert for breakfast. We used to live across the street from a place that made homemade ice cream. We’d go over in the evening after dinner and get two cups, one for dessert then, and one for breakfast in the morning. I gained ten pounds that summer. But I can appreciate some milk fat, let me tell you.

She aslo let me have cake batter for breakfast. Now my husband only lets me eat that for my birthday.

She is always so happy and bubbly, so much so that one one crabby mom of a high school friend asked if she was on drugs..that’s how happy she is all the time. One of my favorite things about her is the goofy names she gives things. Hamburgers are hambambies, strawberries are strawbabies, and she calls Pocahontas poke-your-hontas. She cracks me up.

My Mother’s name was Diane Charmaine. Her parents were musicians and gave her to my Gr. Grandmother to raise because they were on the road all the time, her father with Jack Benny and her mother with Judy Garland. Diane and Charmaine were the titles of my Grandfather’s two favorite songs. My Mom was taken from me when she was only 49 in a car accident on her way home from work. I will be 50 next month. A milestone for me. Always worried about how I would feel reaching her age, but I’ve come through ok. I have four children of my own now and I sure wish she could have known them.

    362. Margie says:

My mother’s name is Eva. She will be 85 in July. When she was about 74-75, (she had been a widow for many years), we were on the phone together one day and she said, “Oh, girl, I’ve got to tell you this. I found my first love.” My reply was, “I thought Daddy was your first love.” “Oh, he was before your Daddy.” I asked, “How did you find him?” And she said, “I read his wife’s obituary in the paper and I went to the funeral.” I almost fell off my chair laughing. I still laugh about it when I think of it and it’s been over 10 years ago. By the way, she is still a widow. Never remarried and my Dad died in 1988.

    363. Amanda says:

My mom’s name is Anna Jean, but everyone calls her Annie. When my oldest was born, her first grandchild, we had to figure out what endearing, grandmotherly name to call her. She wanted to be Nana, but my dad, who loves to kid, couldn’t leave it along and kept calling her Granny Annie. She started to give in and just let us call her that, but the first thing my son called her was Yaya (a bit like the Greek’s Yia yia for grandmother) and she said, “OK, I’ll be that!”

    364. Candace says:

My mom’s name is Rene’. My mom is actually my step mom, she has been the one to raise me as her own since I was two. The most interesting thing about my mom is she has lived in the same town for all of her life, she was even born in the old Munford clinic, not even a hospital, which is now a burger joint. She can’t bring herself to eat there because “people have been born and died there”.

    365. Janis says:

My mother’s name is Joyce. She has a twin brother. When they were born, my grandmother died, leaving my grandfather with 10 children. He gave the twins to a childless couple, who raised them. My mother has met all her brothers and sisters, except one that disappeared not long after she was born. It was always a mystery of what happened to Aunt Polly, until last year, after returning home from a reunion with her family in California, she heard that Aunt Polly’s daughter had found the siblings at last. My mother is 76 and never got to meet her oldest sister, but she now knows her story.

    366. Carolyn Nickoles says:

My mom’s first name is Coy, after her dad. She had an aunt who felt that Coy was not feminine enough, and thought she should be called something else. So, they called her Billie, instead. By the way, the aunt’s name was Jo.

    367. Jenn says:

My mom’s name is Earlene. My dad’s middle name is Earl. When my dad brought my mom home to meet his mother (mouthful!) she laughed out loud when my mother was introduced… and couldn’t stop! Apparently, my dad had always hated his middle name and she couldn’t believe that he was going to marry a woman whose name sounded so much like it.

My mom’s first name is Marilyn. I’ve been reading many of these amazing tributes to moms and what I was just going to put that my mom can pinch really well with her toes. A handy trick when we were being squirrly as kids.

    369. Roxanne says:

My mom’s name is Glenda. A factoid about her is that she loves to drink Dr. Pepper out of styrofoam coffee cups. She does not drink coffee. Ever. But she ALWAYS has coffee cups for her DP. And she leaves/loses them everywhere. When I was a kid, it was a game to see who could find Momma’s Dr. Pepper.

    370. Megan says:

My mom’s name is Nancy. For some reason or another at some point when I was a teenager we got in this little game of trying to scare each other. I would hide in her room and wait until she got out of the shower and jump out from where ever I was. She would hide in the dark in my room and try to scare the wits out of me. I just remember that this went on for awhile before we had to call a cease fire. Not a fact, but a fun story – love it that my mom was able to be silly and competitive with me!

    371. Nancy says:

My mom’s name is Joy and she’s like the Energizer Bunny. She keeps going and going and going. Several years ago she went into cardiac arrest and was clinically dead. The doctor she worked for happened to be on duty at the hospital at the time and performed CPR on her and successfully revived her. (I think she just needed new batteries!) Since then she’s had several other cardiac issues…three or more heart attacks, stents, quadruple bypass surgery, etc. But she can still do more in one day than I do in a week! She takes meals to sick friends, tutors a Sudanese man in English, golfs, travels, plays bridge, writes poetry, chats to all her friends online, makes greeting cards, sews, plays bridge…I can’t even begin to name all she does (she’s 75). She used to come to my house to babysit my kids when we’d go out for an evening and when we’d come home she’d have all my laundry done & folded, the dishes washed & put away, both kids bathed, kitchen cleaned, garbage emptied, windows washed, clothes mended, etc. I don’t know how she does it all! I think I need to find out where she buys her batteries!

    372. Laura says:

Mom’s name is Donna. She met my dad when her father was stationed in Germany (as was my Dad.) He was her roller skate dance instructor. He also drank like a fish, but quit the day he met her and hasn’t drunk since. After two weeks, he said “I don’t want to rush you or anything, but whenever you’re ready, we’ll get married.” They knew each other 8 months before they married and returned to the states. They’ve been married 39 years.

    373. Lisa says:

My mother’s name was Dolores but everyone called her Dodie. She passed away when I was 27. She knew every song in the world and sang them to me all the time when I was young. I hated it and always asked her to stop. Now I have a four year old daughter who LOVES to sing and always asks me to sing her a new song. I am trying so hard to remember all those songs my mom used to sing to me and wishing that she was still here with us to sing them to her granddaughter herself.

Hi Antique Mommy! My Mom’s name is Pamela. She loves all things buggy. She can identify almost any bug we come across around where we live. She’s a science teacher, but that doesn’t explain her fascination with bugs. She was interested in bugs before she became a science teacher.

My dear Mother’s name was Gertie and she died at age 90. She was widowed when I was 5 months old and my brother was 5 years. She worked at all kinds of jobs to support us (welfare was not even a consideration) and the week after I left for college she remarried! She always put her children first and I remember she picked cotten to pay for my high school graduation ring in 1960. This is an interesting thread. BTW I’m about to become a grandmother for the first time and I will be sure and warn the little tyke not to touch one of Sean’s paintings as I noted his punishment is a bit severe! He’s a sweetie though!

    378. Kit says:

My mom’s name is Deborah and is called Debbie by most people. If I believed in reincarnation, I would have to say that my mom was a pioneer woman in a past life. She is a HARD worker, loves and is so gifted at all the domestic things like sewing, cooking, canning and hospitality. My mom sewed all of my prom dresses, using couture patterns and never batted an eye. She makes entertaining look effortless. I hope that I can be just a little bit like her “when I grow up” (um, I’m 37…hope that I’ve made some progess by now).

My Mom’s name is Frances Jean. Sometimes I would call her Mama Jean, and she liked that. As the youngest child, she was her Daddy’s girl, and would go fishing with him at the San Joaquin River in N. Calif. Of course, I think she’s the best mom ever! Loved reading about everyone’s mothers, and the different names, and also really enjoy your blog AM!

My mom’s is Rosie. She didn’t know that her birth certificate actually had a different name on it until she was 60 years old and she lost her home in a fire. Her name was really Rosa. She said that was never a “Rosa” – she was a Rosie type person! Whatever that means!

    384. Carolie says:

My mother’s name is DuBose — it’s a family name, and would have been her first name whether she’d been born a boy or a girl. It’s also my middle name. She hated it as a kid, and got people to call her Debbie and Bosey. Now, she is very proud of it.

My mother is one of the most positive women I know, and can always find a silver lining to anything. She taught me to love the taste of words, and at 42, I can still recite all of the poems we learned together when I was little.

She’s a retired schoolteacher who now spends her days walking in the woods to find materials for natural dyes, dyeing yarn herself, weaving beautiful things and knitting the funky, colorful socks she insists on wearing with sandals. When I was younger, her insistence on wearing many different brightly colored patterns at the same time, and socks with sandals, embarrassed me to pieces. Now I love seeing my vivacious, vivid mom, and those bright colors just serve to enhance her bright smile.

I know I’m too late for the giveaway. But I’m going to play along with the thread anyway. My mother’s name is Lilian (one L in the middle) and she’s Welsh. When she was a little girl, she lived through the bombing of their town by the German forces during WWII. She grew up with chamber pots under the beds for if you had to pee in the middle of the night. When she was in high school, and had friends for a sleepover, her brother would put epsom salts in the chamber pots so that when used, they would fizz over and embarrass the girl! When she was older and living in America, she was appalled to see chamber pots in an antique store! “I’m not antique,” she said. She wouldn’t call you antique either–she was 43 when I was born.

    387. Beth says:

My grandmother named her daughter (my mom) after her sister, Margaret, and an eccentric family friend named Rose. Margaret Rose (who always went by both names, being a good Mississippi girl) grew up and had a daughter of her own, whom she planned to name Mary Margaret, and call her by both names, of course. Her husband protested; she changed her mind and named the baby Margaret Elizabeth. Her husband protested again, saying that it was entirely too long a name for such a little baby girl. So I became not Margaret Elizabeth, not Elizabeth, but Beth…and now my nephews have shortened it even more, and simply call me “B!”

My Mom’s name was Gladys – My dad called her “Happy Bum” :)

She was one of 11 children. Her twin sister died at birth. She had 6 children of her own, of which I am the last. As a young bride with a new baby, and my father away working, she once tried to burn tires to heat the house- luckily, no one die. My father once brough home an entire beef tenderloin – she thought it was a pot roast and boiled it :)

My Mom’s name was almost Billie Sue after both her parents but thankfully they decided on Deborah Sue. She has always gone by Debbie and was going to be an Opera singer but changed her major and became a Teacher instead; which worked out wonderfully seeing that she home-schooled my sister, brother, and I. Also could you have imagined if she had been an Opera singer named Billie Sue?!
I have a funny story about “cooking” when Mama and Daddy were first married. Mama had been really excited about cooking a wonderful dinner for Daddy and had purchased a canned ham. Having a good old Southern cook as a Mom; she didn’t know quite what to do with a “canned” ham.
Well, she decided to bake the ham IN the can…she knew it was done when the oven door blew open and the can exploded :) She’s never been able to live that one down and actually never told anyone till several years later, haha.
She’s a wonderful Mother and perfect “Granggie” to my sister’s four and my soon to be four :) Our kids are “birth control” for my brother and his wife who increased their “five year rule” to ten :)

Well, I’m super late for the giveaway, but we’re missionaries in Africa, so we probably wouldn’t have qualified anyway. I just couldn’t let this opportunity pass to talk about my mom, though!

Her name is Lois, and was named by my grandma’s roomate in the hospital. My grandparents couldn’t agree on “another girl’s name”, and the roommate had delivered a boy and shared her girl’s choice. :-)

My mom is one of the most caring and helpful people you’d ever meet. And it started young. My mom tells the story of when she was 4 and my grandma was letting the baby “cry it out” in the wee hours one morning. I guess my mom couldn’t figure out why her mother wasn’t taking care of the baby, so she went into her parent’s room (grandma was still sleeping!), picked up her sister, carried her downstairs, grabbed a cold bottle out of the fridge, carried it and the baby back upstairs and fed the baby in her bed. Then went back to sleep. :-) She said at the time, she couldn’t figure out why her mom was so upset when she learned what happened. :-)

By the way, my mom is Lois Marie, I’m Lisamarie, and my daughter is Felicia Marie. :-)

Just catching up with your blog after being away, I know this is late but here goes- My mum’s name is Mary. About 15 years ago at the age of 59, she had a brain haemorrhage and was semi-conscious in intensive care. The nurses were doing observations on her every 15 minutes, testing her response to pain, checking her pupils, asking her questions such as what’s your name? After being asked many times she eventually mumbled in a frustrated voice ” Mary Christmas!” It caused tears of laughter in what was a very stressful time and guess what – she made an amazing recovery after the doctors only giving her a 30% chance of surviving.

I found your site this morning while blog surfing. Love it! Even tho the contest is over, I thought I’d post about mom anyway.
My mom’s name is Patsy Ann. Nothing special about her name, and if there was I’ll never know now. You see my mom has Alzheimers. She is a very young 65 years old and is laying in the bed in the room across the hall from me not knowing much of anything right now. She doesn’t know me at all, thinks I’m her nurse and calls me mamme. I posted recently on my blog about how I forgot to ask her questions about things, like her name, my grandmas history, just all kinds of stuff. Mom worked all of my life and we never really spent good quality time together. And now the regrets are starting. Too little too late I guess.
Mom was a great mom and raised the three of us to the best of her abilities, and thought that working and us having extra money was the trick. I would have rather had mom than the stuff she was able to buy for us. Hindsight is 20/20. OH well Im sure I’ve brought you down enough LOL. Have a great and blessed day, and thanks for being creative, great idea for a contest………Kitty

I’m too late for the contest, but I want to tell you about my mom!

Her name is Gail (technically Eleanor Gail, but her mom was Eleanor and so she’s always used Gail as her first name).

She was born in Honolulu (a few years earlier than one of the early posters here!) and still loves to tell the tale of the big tidal wave they all survived! She finished her college degree 45 years after she started it and is a great writer. One of her assignments in her last few semesters of class was haiku, and she spun off dozens and dozens of them, most of which were hysterically funny!

I don’t show her or tell her how much I appreciate her nearly as much as I should. She was miraculous in those early days after our twin daughters were born last summere, teaching me how to be a mom and how to love babies. I couldn’t have done it without her! BabyB is named Eleanor, in honor of her and my grandmother. (BabyA is named in honor of DH’s grandmother Claire.)

My mom works too hard and too long. She’ll be 72 this year and she works fulltime as a children’s librarian. Her story times have huge waiting lists! I’m glad she does something she loves, and is surrounded by kiddos. She lives 5 hours away from us (and our girls, her last grandkids) so at least she can enjoy little ones closer to home.

I’m just catching up on some blog reading and know I’m too late for the contest, but I’ve been reading some of the stories left here and wanted to add something about my mom. Her name was Marilynne (Mary Lynne) and she passed away 11 years ago this week at the age of 52. Mom was the youngest of seven children, born the morning after her father left for Japan (WWII). The two of them met for the first time when she was 18 months old. Her older siblings would show her pictures and tell her “that man is Daddy”. When Grandpa got home from the war, she called him “ThatManDaddy” for a long time.
