So Flippin’ Cool

April 30, 2008 | Give Aways, Hallmark Holidays

flip videoLast year, the lovely folks at Flip Video sent me their little hand held video-gadgety thingeedoo to try out and it was love at first sight.  This year they sent me one to give away to you, just in time for Mother’s Day! Yay nice Flip people!

Here’s the lowdown on The Flip:  It is custom made for someone like me with a low techno-IQ and little time/patience/energy to figure stuff out and it’s small enough to fit in your purse.

It is so simple to use.  Seriously, I took it out of the box, shot some video and then uploaded it (or is it downloaded?) to a video service in about 15 minutes. I keep it in my car just in case Sean does something cute or I spot a UFO and the local news needs footage. Because if a UFO is going to land on Earth, you better believe it will be in Texas.

You can get one at most of the usual places where techno-gadgetry is sold.  Or you can leave a comment here and maybe win one.

Leave a comment on this post by midnight Thursday (5/1) telling me your mother’s first name (or your favorite mom-type person) and some fun factoid about her.  I’ll randomly draw a name to win a 60-minute Flip Video.

I’ll go first.  My mother’s name is Vivian.  Her parents named her Alberta but someone changed it on the birth certificate to Vivian. No one knows who.  It was too much trouble to change back, so Vivian she is to this day or “Bib” as her family calls her.  Or Wivian.  Also, her grandmother kidnapped her when she was five and took her to St. Louis. But that’s a story for another day.

* * * * * *

Edited to Add: Y’all! I am loving your comments and hearing about your moms. I really should be doing about a zillion other things, but I can’t tear myself away.

Edited Again to Add: Even though the contest is over, feel free to leave a comment about your mom! I love reading them.

  1. Starr says:

Melynda. Fun factoid: Her name is spelled with a “y”, and she loves to write loopy letters, so my middle name “Nycole” has a “y” as well. I continued the tradition with my three kids, Ryan, Dylan, and Lauryn.

  2. Diana says:

    We’re both up late tonight!

My mom’s name is Janice. She wanted my daughter to call her Auntie Janice because she wasn’t thrilled about the whole grandma thing. She settled for Grandmomma.

  3. Amy says:

    My Mom’s name is Virginia.

She was the most amazing seamstress in the whole world. She could look at something and create it on her Singer. What a woman she was!

  4. Cathy says:

My mom’s name was Alice, but everybody called her Sweet Alice. Her Gyno gave her that knic-name years ago. #2 We are all very sick and twisted and find this to be a fun fact and she would love it. She absolutely loved the color pink, everything was pink. We lost her two months ago, she is now residing in a lovely pink vault (who knew they made such?) that actually sparkled in the sunshine. It was a true shame they hid it away in the ground as it was a thing of rare beauty.

  5. Sue says:

My mom’s first name is Linda. Well, EVENTUALLY it was Linda. When she was born (way back in the stone ages), they still put women completely under for childbirth, and when the nurse came around with the birth certificate my grandmother, still in a drug induced fog, told them the baby’s name was Doris.

She had no memory of saying this, and didn’t actually notice the “mistake” on her birth certificate for about a year, when she pulled it out one day, choked on her breakfast and made my Grandfather have it changed.

  6. Natalie says:

My mom’s name is Nancy, and she’s had a rough go of it right from the start - she went from the hospital directly to the orphanage. But she is gentle and sweet and kind, almost to a fault.

My mom has a MI, most likely from never having a home and parents of her own, and for several years (maybe 12?) she lived in a shared housing situation with two other housemates, and a counselor who visited several times a week to help them do various things (shopping, etc.). A little over a year ago, my sister bought my mother a brand new townhouse, and has decorated it *beautifully* - it could be in a magazine! - and my mom is so very, very proud of it. Not surprisingly, my mom is doing very well with my sister caring for her, and in many ways, mothering her like she’d never had a chance to be mothered early on. I don’t know if this counts as “fun”, but I can assure you, my mom is healthier and happier than she’s been in a long, long time. :)

  7. Diane J. says:

Jessie Luerene. She hated her first name because she thought it was too masculine for a woman, so she was known to Lue to most friends and family. For some reason, some of Daddy’s friends and family called her Becky or Beck. Even she never knew where that came from.

She went on to be with her Lord on April 13, 2005 and I love her and miss her so, to this very day and beyond.

  8. Photochick (Amanda) says:

My mom’s name is Janet Louise. She has about the coolest family history ever! Her mother’s great-great-grandmother & grandfather actually came to America from Germany on a ship. At the time of the journey, they had a baby daughter that they didn’t really think stood much of a chance of surviving the journey… Because they couldn’t bear the thought of putting her body out to sea, the father prepared for the voyage by making a little bitty casket for little Charlotte (their little baby girl). Amazingly, Charlotte DID survive the journey to America! Today that little casket sits in New Harmony Museum (close to where we live)
I don’t know if that actually count about something about my Mom, though… So, how about this: her parents thought that they weren’t able to have children so they adopted my Uncle Darrel. Less than 2 years later - surprise! My Granny was pregnant! But the big surprise came after the birth… of twins boys! My Mom was then born just a couple of years later. They all grew up on my Grandpa’s dairy farm, and today that farm is run by my twin Uncles.
Hmm… there’s not really a whole lot JUST about my mom in there, though, is there? OK! Here we go - this is all about my Momma! She has the most beautiful shade of blue-green eyes I’ve ever seen; she loves the outdoors - gardening, landscaping, tending to her flowers; and if she knew I was writing all this about her, she’d probably beg me not to! She’s incredibly shy. Finally, she’s the best Mother I could have ever asked for. I strive in every way to be like her - she’s my role model and best friend.

Thanks so much for such a fun contest! I think I love your contests so much because they make me get creative and write about things that I may have never thought to do so before. Much love to you and yours, AM! Take care and God Bless - oh, and I hope that you have an absolutely wonderful Mothers Day!

  9. Missy says:

My mum’s name is Gayle. For a while there I thought I’d call my first daughter Abigail, but then I met a girl with the same name and changed my mind. It’s weird how that can happen.

  10. kelli says:

Her name is Diane, In the 50’s, she had a TV show in memphis called “Princess Diane”. She told stories with stuffed animals and puppets as her “story group”. We still have her crown. It had to be spraypainted blue to be seen on camera back then.

  11. jennifer says:

    My mom’s name is Angela.
Friday she broke her pinkie toe! She’s a daycare director, and would NEVER dream of taking a day off work due to a taped up foot. So, she’s hobbling around, taking care of her employees and the kids, and I can’t be there to help! I live in Africa right now, and she’s in Alabama. I miss her something awful, especially since she’s hurt!

  12. Todd M says:

My mother’s name is Meredith. My father’s name is Don. Together, they became “Don Meredith”. Weird, huh?

  13. Daren says:

Mom’s name is Deidrie. Her mother liked to spell her daughter’s names oddly, obviously.

I’ve always thought it was interesting that my mother attended 19 different schools. Her father was an engineer for Boeing causing them to relocate alot. Because they often had next to no notice about an upcoming move, my grandmother always had the makings for goulash in a box, ready to go. Grab that box, and at least they’d have something to eat at the new place. To this day, my mother hates goulash. Says it reminds of her being the odd girl out again.

  14. Moriah @ Please Pass the Salt says:

My mom’s name is Debbi and she’s famous for asking questions she already knows the answer to. Sometimes endearing, sometimes not.

  15. Lisa says:

Dee (actually Lessie) She doesn’t have a birth certificate so I’m not sure how I’d get her a passport if I wanted to take her abroad. She is the oldest of eight and turned 87 in January. I was her Sean…she was a mere 39 when I was born and my brother was 15. She says she prayed for twins everyday because she didn’t want to raise another only child and then THANKED HIM daily when she discovered what a handful I was.

  16. Lesley says:

My mom’s name is Marlene. When she retired she moved back to the small town she was raised in and lives in the house her dad built.

  17. Damsel says:

That flip looks AWESOME — just what I need since my sister is moving away to Minnesota with her new husband… she’d love for me to video him 24/7 as it is now!

My mother’s first name is Carla. She has always had an incredible gift that allowed her to just LOOK at someone and know they are lying. *ahem* That is why I am not a good liar — I grew up thinking that everyone would be able to just look at me and know, so I never spent any time perfecting the … um… “art” (or is it a science?) of lying.

  18. Damsel says:

Oh, and the “him” to whom I’m referring is my three-year-old son. (THAT could have been embarrassing. Sheesh.)

  19. Tonggu Momma says:

My mom’s name is Sherri. A fun factoid about her — a couple of decades ago, she had to have surgery to remove part of her salivary gland. Whenever she eats spicy food, a dime-sized oval on her cheek beads up with sweat.

  20. Kelly says:

My mom’s first name is Anna, and she is a farmer’s daughter. She had to gather the eggs every morning before school.

  21. Wendy says:

My mom’s name is Mary Helen - all her nieces & nephews call her that & so did her parents but she hated to be called by both names & in her own social circles she is only “Mary”. Fun Factoid: (one is not enough but here goes) When she & my dad & brother & sister lived in Japan (stationed with USAF) in the 50s, my dad was throwing her a surprise birthday party & to get her out of the house, they drove around randomly to random places & made her sit in the car. Not too bad - except it was in the midst of a typhoon!

  22. Jenn says:

I would love to give that neat little video camera to my sister since she is the best mom I know (our own mom is pretty great, too).
Kim grew these amazing little creatures for me to play with and now they are growing into amazing young boys.
She works full time, cooks dinner every night, cleans up after the craziness and still manages to shoot baskets with her oldest or ride bikes with the youngest.
    She’s amazing.

  23. Bethany says:

My mom’s name is Betty. She’s the middle child of 5, is extremely patient, serves her family and church with a willing servant’s heart, and one of my best friends.

  24. Karen says:

My mom’s name is Paulette. She was named Olive Paulette at birth, but she hated it so very much that when she was sixteen her parents let her change it legally to Paulette Renae.

  25. Brigitte says:

My mom’s name is Nicole (well, I think it was “Marie Nicole”, but ALL the girls had Marie as a first name in the area where she grew up).

When she was a little girl, she and a friend found a real, live honeybee hive and were thrilled to be able to eat the little white nodules of honey . . that she only later found were the baby bees, NOT the honey. She still says they TASTED like honey, though!

  26. Beverlydru says:

My mom is Bettye Blue. She is an identical twin and to this day is so much like her sister it’s amazing. They used to switch dates in college and no one was the wiser. They are quite a pair. I have always felt like my first cousins are really half sisters. It’s special.

  27. Melessa says:

My mom’s name is Linda Lou and I had at least two other friends in high school with moms by that same name. Apparently, it was popular in the 1940’s.

  28. Kathy Didds says:

Beverly. Not an unusual name for her generation, but she has an unusual story. Mom was born in Honolulu, Hawaii three and a half months before Pearl Harbor was born. My granparents were living there while my grandfather’s company was constructing government projects at Hickham Field Air Base. He was playing tennis when the Japanese bomber planes flew over the islands, and actually heard the engines, saw the planes (but not the “colors” on them, and wondered what “our boys were doing out so early”. They were relocated to the States (Hawaii was not yet one of the “States”) on a blackout ship several months later.

My mom was a bride at 18( a lot of women were back then), mother at 19 and 20, and widow at 21. She worked extremely hard to keep our little family going in the right direction, and I was blessed with my “new dad” when I was 6 years old. She’s been a great mom, and I’d love to bless her with this fun little gadget so she can record my dad playing in his “Over 60 Tournament Softball League”. He’s 69 1/2 and going strong, pitching for the other “old guys”.

  29. That Girl says:

My mother is Jane. She is an identical twin and when she was born, my granny was mad that she had twins and wouldn’t name them. My great grandmother told the nurses to call one of them Jeanie and one of them Janie. The nurses decided which was which. Oh - my granny likes them both now! :)

  30. heidi says:

My mom’s name is Irene. My grandmother was Edna Irene; and I am Heidi Irene, and my cousin is Tami Irene. Not the coolest name, but it sure is popular in our family.
My mom was 14 when her mother had twins. The twins were 12 when their mother died. My aunt moved in with us, and my uncle moved in with our great grandmother. I was 4 at the time. My parents raised my aunt as though she was their own. I grew up thinking she was my sister.

  31. Heather says:

Long time lurker here, love your writing!

My mom is Elaine and she is about to become a grandma for the 4th time…though me for the first time :)

Did you see the Oprah on puppy mills? My mom is one of those people who rescues dogs and cats. She (and my Dad) are dedicated to saving one life at a time and have provided hundreds of people with loving companions. As one of her children we struggle (at times) with feeling as loved as the bizzilions of dogs she focuses on, but when it is put into perspective it is hard to not view her as a saint for all she does.

  32. tas says:

My mom’s name is Lynne, and I love her to pieces. She’s my step mother. The most amazing thing about her (for me) is that she got an instant family when she married my dad. But I never once said ‘you’re not my mom’ It takes a special woman to do that.
She also never stops baking….there are always cookies, brownies, pies loafs, or whatever there! yum!

  33. rebecca says:

My mom is Shirley May, but was always called Shay by all her friends because there were so many Shirley’s in her neighborhood.

Her first boyfriend called her Shay, so my dad refused to, and after they married, she became plain Shirley again. My dad’s out of luck, though, because when we adopted our daughter from China, we named her….Shay.

My mom married at 16, and had 6 kids by the time she was 29. Maybe not too fun for her, but she says she was “young and dumb” enough to enjoy it. She became a grandmother at 36. Now, that’s crazy!

  34. Sarah N says:

My mother’s name at birth was Betty. And she hated it. Finally when she turned 50, as a present to herself, she had it legally changed to Elizabeth. Most people who have known her forever call her Betty, but her newer aquaintances call her Elizabeth.

As an added factoid, Mom’s mom’s name is Virginia Dare - after the first child born in America to English parents in 1587.

    Thanks for a great giveaway!

  35. MommyJ says:

My Mom’s first name is Clare, but she goes by her middle name, Lindsay. Because her mother was named Clare, and went by Clare, and I guess they didn’t want to have the same name. My middle name is Clare, after Mom and Grandma, and if I ever manage to have another baby girl, she will be Clare as well.

Fun factoid… when my mother was 12 years old, she saw the beatles in concert with her church group, sat on the end of the stage, and slapped hands with John Lennon. I think it’s awesome that her youth minister took them to see the beatles!

  36. klutzymama says:

My mom’s name is Sherrie, but she’s always wished it was Valerie. She even goes to the extent of buying those little keychains with names on them that say “Valerie” and carrying them around on her keys!

  37. Shelly Deans says:

My mom’s name is Haven. She has recently had to have not one, but 2 shots in her eye! Yikes. She was very brave. Next week just the 2 of us leave for a road trip from Flordia to Oklahoma to see my sister graduate from college.

  38. misslisslee says:

My mom’s name is Donna. She was probably way excited over Neil Diamond on American Idol. She turned 60 this year. She shares the same middle name with me and her mother. I have only boys, so apparently the buck stops here.

  39. Tracy @ My Cup Runneth Over says:

My Mom’s name is Shirley — named after Shirley Temple. She grew up helping to cook for her 10 siblings. By the time she and my Dad were married, she was an old pro adn still cooks like nobody’s business. Another really cool thing about her is she LOVES making beautiful quilts and wall-hangings. When my Grandma died, she took all her dresses (most of which were varying shades of purple — her favorite color) and made wall hangings for all her siblings and for my sister and I. She’s precious!

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share!

    Blessings! = )

  40. Beth says:

My mom’s name is Jo. Fun factoid… she must have some sort of strange problem between her ears and brain with processing music, because she can NOT get the words to songs right! Back in the day, there was a popular song on the radio called Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, and she insisted that it was Gunga Dee and The Jungle Beat! Just an example of the many songs thru the years … :)

  41. Jessica says:

My mom’s name is Jeanne; however, she pronounces it, Jeannie. Her given name is Jeanne Ann, but her nickname as a child was Jeannie and it stuck; however, she still spells it Jeanne, pronounced with a long E. She was also called “greenie Jeannie” in high school because she was so naive. I’d say she’s not so naive anymore.

  42. Marie says:

    Ooooh!

My Mom’s name is Joan. I just learned that she got on a bike for the first time when she was in 8th grade!! She was amazed to hear that her grandson has his first 2-wheeler at age 4.

  43. Wendy says:

My mom’s name was Constance; her friends called her Connie, but my cousins called her “Nonnie” when the firstborn couldn’t say “Aunt Connie” and shortened it up. There’s a lot of fun factoids about her, but I’ll stick with my two faves…1) she and her younger sister were famous in the town they grew up in for their tap-dancing skills (we have pics of the two of them in stage costumes, hoofing away), and 2) she met my dad on Bermuda, while he was stationed at the Air Force base and she was teaching school there.

  44. Marsha says:

My Mom’s name is Jane. Our family calls her Central. Because a long time ago, one of us commented that “Mom is central dispatch”…she knows everything, she keeps up with everything, she does everything for us…She’s a WONDERFUL Mom and I love her so much!

  45. Fraulein says:

My mom is Antoinette Rosina, but she has always gone by Toni. (And my dad is Eugene, so together they are Toni and Gene, but sometimes people make the mistake of thinking they are Tony and Jean!) At 75, she is one of a disappearing generation of hard-core Italian cooks still going strong in the greater New York/New Jersey area. Still cooking the Christmas Eve “seven fishes” and baking up a storm all year long.

  46. Lesley says:

Linda is my mom and she is very laid back, has a green thumb like I have ever seen and loves Jesus.

  47. Tammy Marcelain says:

My mother’s name - Beryl Beryl is a precious stone that is talked about in the Bible. She pronounced it like Cheryl but with a “B” I can’t tell you how many times I heard her explain the pronunciation of her name that way. She was an Aussie born and raised and came over to the states to see Elvis Presley. She was a great mom, full of spunk and fire.

  48. Monica says:

My mom’s name was Nancy. She was my best friend. A fun factoid is she was “green” before being green was cool. When we had birthday parties or family meals, she would make us write our names on our disposable cups (ok, so she wasn’t green enough to make us use actual glasses…but who wanted to wash all those after a party?!?) so we wouldn’t waste them by getting a new one everytime we wanted a drink.

  49. Liz says:

My mom’s name is Sherry and she’s a 66 year old ball of energy. She can outwork me, outpray me, and outdo me in everyway. :-)

  50. Karen (Simply A Musing Blog) says:

My mother’s first name is Hazel. But she hates that name and has always insisted on being called by her middle name, “Karlene”.

  51. Fiddledeedee (It Coulda Been Worse) says:

My mama’s name was Margaret Ann. She once told a gal interviewing hapless shoppers at the Piggly Wiggly, that the main reason she was purchasing that particular brand of toilet paper, was “Because it’s the only kind that doesn’t scratch my a**.”

  52. Amy says:

My mom’s name is Sally Faye. She has always dis-liked her name, and when she was little, she pretended her name was Sarah. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, she even nudged me to name her Sarah (with an ‘h’, of course)! Fun tidbit - when she was a senior in High School, her school merged with the local rival high school. So, she and her class had to move to the new school with all of her local rivals. The new principal was a nasty old man and rode down the hallways in a golf cart snapping and yelling at the students!

  53. Gina says:

My mom’s name is Marlene. She is an identical twin. She was a stay at home mom when I was growing up, but now she works for Macys and she has been named employee of the year alsmot every single year since she started. She’s amazing.

  54. Lori says:

My mom’s actual first name is Mary. But she goes by Diane, her middle name. She decided when she was three that she didn’t want to be Mary anymore, because there were “too many Mary’s”! She still likes to be an *individual*. She’s the BEST!

  55. Jessie says:

My mom’s name is Donna. When she was pregnant with me she worked at a bank and was in a hold-up!

She’s also just awesome. She has four sisters and they all have names that are five letters and four letters for the middle name, until Grandma got to #5 and she just got lazy and named the girl Barbara.

  56. JCK says:

My mother’s name is Michaelin. She continues to inspire me. She just turned 70 and is very athletic. She climbed Mt. Washington in N.H. last summer - over 6,000 feet in just a few hours. She also plays tennis, swims, hikes and has 20 grandchildren.

  57. Kim says:

My mom’s first name is Hilda, but don’t tell anyone. Officially she is Jo H. We have never had a holiday where my mom didn’t burn the rolls. It’s a tradition now to peel off the burned crusty bottom before eating. She’s a good cook, but those brown & serve’s get her every time.

  58. Jan says:

My mother’s name is Patsy. After 14 years alone, after my daddy passed on, she fell in love again, and remarried. What fun it is to see the sparkly, girly, freshly-in-love side of my mother! with 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and another on the way, she seems to have found the fountain of youth in Pa (our new step-father).

  59. KathyK says:

My mother’s name is Joan. She was the eighth of 10 children. Her Aunt Vera, who was a school teacher, named all the children. My mother was named after Joan of Arc.

  60. Lisa Kay says:

My mother’s name was Frances. She decided to be a stay at home mom when she had me - not a popular choice in the 70’s. She could sew, cook, tend to a garden, and keep the house spotless without messing up her hair. And that’s the truth!

  61. Cyndi says:

My mom’s name is Ilean. She was adopted at 6 months old and raised as an only child by my wonderful grandparents. She always wanted a brother or sister. She found her biological information about 3 years ago and now has a brother and sister. I’ve never seen her so happy.

  62. Kate says:

Wow….some pretty unusual names here for such older people! Names that I thought were new and trendy, apparently are old and passe!!

My mom’s name is Joan, and she was named after Joan Crawford. However, she was a great mom and NOTHING like Mommie Dearest!!!

  63. Tami says:

My mom’s name is Melissa - - though she pronounces it as ma-leesa. Her interesting factoid is that she has the most beautiful translucent “sea green” eyes I’ve ever seen!!

  64. susie says:

My mother’s name is Loudelle (pronounced like “Lou” not “loud”). My family moved a lot when I was growing up (I went to 12 schools in 12 years) and she always made every house seem like home.

  65. Amy Beth @ Ministry So Fabulous! says:

My mom’s name is Kelly and and an interesting fact about her is that she’ll probably be getting re-married before I actually get married for the first time.

    :)

  66. tonya says:

My mom’s name is Donna. She had me when she was 18 and became a grandmother when she was 43. We thought she was too young to be a grandmother (LOL!) but we lovingly dubbed her Granny in making light of her youth but that she was a grandmother. So she is Granny but in no way what you envision of a Granny. A family joke got started calling her Super Granny because she is always helping us with our horses and pretty soon it got shortened to Super G amongst our friends. So, a lot of our friends from the horse shows call her Super G. She is the best “Granny” ever!

  67. bonniebeth says:

My mother’s name is Eloise - no middle name.
She was the middle child of eleven and her job was to cook for the family. A younger brother and sister thought the food was too spicy and so they pulled up all of the pepper plants in the garden. What they didn’t know was that their father liked his food spicy - so he spanked them with a cotton stalk.
She married a preacher when she was 19 and began her cooking ministry. She is the only person I know who converted a mean old man with her chicken and dumplings.

She is also one of many women whom Bill Clinton has kissed :0)

  68. Jen L. says:

My mom’s name is Patricia but no one calls her that - it’s either Trish or Trisha. There are so many fun facts about her but my favorite is a memory of our trip to Colorado when I was in the 10th grade. We didn’t stay in a hotel with continental breakfast so we had to stop at McD’s for hot tea. Well, no sooner was it handed to her but she spilled it. So we went to BK to get another cup of tea - she spilled it too. I think we went to Hardees where her lovely daughter put the sugar in. We still tease her about it to this day (almost 20 years later).

  69. Smockity Frocks says:

My mom’s name is Sandra. She married while in high school at 17 and still graduated 2nd in her class.

  70. chrissy says:

My mom’s name is Kathleen Virginia, but goes by Kathy. An interesting factoid…she loves to go to Las Vegas with her girlfriends.

  71. Donna Patton says:

My mom’s name is Geneva. She was born to a large German family in southern Illinois. She was born in 1920 and grew up during the Great Depression. She is very frugal. She has been married to my dad for 61 years. I would love to win the video thingy. Thanks, I love your blog!!!

    Donna

  72. Lisa says:

My mom’s name is Marie. My mom was a high school drop out but then went on to get her GED. She went to college and then to law school where she got straight A’s. She decided to read the Bible to prove it wrong but instead got saved:)

  73. ShackelMom says:

My mother’s name is Barbara. She just turned 80 and has less gray hair than I do! She was a good little girl growing up, so it was a bit of a shock when she got me. But she does remember doing one bad thing; pulling a chair out from under a boy who was just sitting down, when she was six.

Now she is a wise woman and has a steady stream of people who come through her home to get her wise counsel. She has been the wise and caring mother that so many have needed in her years of ministry with my Dad to college and single adults. Such a blessing! And I’m the one who gets to call her ‘Mom!’

  74. Jami says:

My mom’s name is Pam. Her mom’s name is Betty; her mother-in-law’s name is Betty and her stepmom’s name is Betty - how funny is that!

  75. Christine says:

My mom’s name is Rosemary. She was adopted twice. The first couple who adopted her divorced when she was two so they didn’t see the need to keep her. She was an only child who went on to have 11 of her own. Then Dad died and she was left to raise them by herself…11 kids ages 2 to 15. Fun times in our house!

  76. Mandy says:

My mom’s name is Sue. My mom survived an abusive ex-husband , worked two jobs, owned a restaurant and raised three kids with the help of her parents. Out of her three siblings, she is the only one to raise children that all completed high school and went on to receive higher education. She wasn’t (and isn’t) a perfect mom, but she is always there for our family. It has been a tough year for my mom. She lost both of her brothers to cancer within three months of each other. She has overcome a lot and still loves her Savior and is a terrific Mimmie to all of her grandkids.

  77. Jenny 867-5309 says:

Mum’s name is Sherril. Everyone just “knows” it’s spelt Cheryl. She’s so tired of correcting people that all her medical information, etc has her down as Cheryl. That would drive me nuts!

  78. Jeni says:

My mom’s name is Debbie, and she’s not happy unless there’s gardening dirt under her fingernails! :-)

  79. gretchen from lifenut says:

My mom is Donna, and she has an infectious laugh and a 1,000 watt smile.

  80. shayne says:

    My mom’s name is Janice.

She’s scared of heights and one time, while she was at a seminar with her co-workers, they thought it would be fun to stay at a hotel with a glass elevator, and book a room on the 5th floor. Let’s just say that not a good time was had by any.

  81. Sharon says:

My mom’s name is Virginia and she talks to everybody and anybody. When I was a kid it took forever to shop or do anything as she would get into long conversations with (until then) strangers. Now, I appreciate her friendliness….

  82. chilihead says:

    My mom’s name is Donna.

One time she was visiting me she decided she wanted to go out for breakfast. I was fairly new to our area and didn’t know where anything was. We stopped at a gas station and Donna went in to ask the clerk if he knew where we could eat breakfast.

She came out shaking her head. When I asked what was going on she said, “He kept talking about Benny Jin’s being just down the street on the right.”

“Benny Jin’s?” I asked. She confirmed. So we drove.

And, sure enough, there was a VILLAGE INN just down the street on the right.

  83. Laura says:

My mom’s name is Ruth Ann. Most people call her Ruth but her family calls her Ruth Ann or Ruthie. Her sister who is eight years older named her after someone she liked on a soap opera!

  84. Julie at Elisharose says:

My mother’s name is Judith, but she goes by Judy. Always a little out there for her Catholic school upbringing, she told me that once she was walking up the aisle at church when she felt her petticoat slipping. She let it fall, walked out of it, and threw it over her shoulder.

  85. Elizabeth says:

My mother’s name was Helen. She was a strong, determined woman who never backed down from a challenge. She went to Rutgers University, Class of ‘39, as a handicapped (bone infections as a kid) orphaned (dad died of pneumonia) girl on a scholarship (family money lost in ‘29) and earned a degree in microbiology, earning her room & board money by cleaning the labs. But to hear her tell it, is was all a great time.

Fun fact: Mother was born just before midnight on May 1, but the doctor didn’t get around to checking the time until after midnight and put down May 2 on the birth certificate. Grandmother always insisted she was right “I was paying attention to the time and let him pay attention to the baby, but he wouldn’t believe me!”

  86. Lauren M says:

My mom’s first name is Vonnie and her favorite TV channel is the Weather Channel! For real! And she’s only 51. She loves knowing what kind of weather is going on around the country and she likes the extra shows they show on there sometimes, like Stormchasers. BORING!! My family loves to tease her about it.

  87. Jennifer says:

My mom’s name is Linda. When she was growing up she had a very common maiden name and there were always multiple girls with the same name as her. She was excited to marry my dad who has an unusual last name (not the only reason she married him :-)). She thought she would no longer have the same name as someone else. Then my dad’s brother married a Lynda and now she has a sister in law with the same name.

  88. v~ says:

My mom’s name is Dolores and she gave birth to 6 babies, of which I am the oldest. The woman CANNOT be embarassed and felt fitting rooms were a waste of time - especially with so many littles. While dragging us gaggle of kids around K-Mart to buy clothes, she would calmly step into a pair of pants under her long broom skirt, drop the skirt to check herself out in a mirror, pull the skirt back up and drop the pants. It was mortifying. Even more so when she couldn’t understand my lack of desire to try on my first bra OVER my blouse while standing in the aisle. “It saves so much time!” she enthused. Argh! I can only aspire to one day mortify my own children so masterfully.

  89. She's So There... says:

My late mother’s name was Ruth Anne…and when she left for college she convinced her mother, who was 55 to go too….they graduated the same day. Education was important to her and when she left us, her scholarships continue to send girls to college all over the world….she was named for her grandmother, Annie Laurie…and always called Anne.

  90. anonymous says:

My Mom’s name is Evelyn. She is the oldest of 8 and was always called Sis. That later became Aunt Sis to the masses. Looks strange in writing, but it is just a natural part of our family herstory. When she still could, she was one of the last great communicators. She often wrote over 100 notes and letters a month. When her sister had to go into a nursing home, my Mom wrote to her every day. So I’m wondering, ms/mrs. internetz, when was the last time you wrote an actual letter? (Not playing for the flip, just for the fun - thanks!)

  91. Nelson's Mama says:

    My Mom’s name is Janice.

She doesn’t have a middle name, my grandmother hated the the middle name that she gave her first child so she refused to give her remaining three children middle names. How’s that for logic?

My Mom is known as Janny to all of her grandgirls…(and almost all of us now!)

  92. Starnes Friend says:

My mom’s name is Rita. (You already knew that.)
Fun fact: She seriously considered becoming a nun. Nine of her aunts were nuns.
Fun fact: She has two artificial hips and one artificial knee.
Fun fact: She didn’t go completely crazy raising 9 children! (I wasn’t the worst - you can ask her.)

  93. Lisa says:

My mom’s name is Gail and she is the sweetest and kindess woman alive.

  94. Susan J. says:

I love reading these stories. Thanks for the opportunity for all of us to share.
My mother is Jo Anne, but I am not sure if that is the spelling on her birth certificate. My Mamaw (her mother) usually spelled it Joan, but pronounced it Jo Ann(e). She was born on her brother’s 14th birthday. He joined the Navy when he was still in high school, so he was not around much when she was young. Her best friend even accused her of lying about having a brother.

  95. Veronica Mitchell says:

My mother’s name is Kate. When she was 38, she earned a college basketball scholarship with her mad sports skillz and went back to college.

  96. bringingupdaisy says:

My mama’s name is Alene and she started driving when she was twelve. Back then there were no age requirements or tests…she will be 92 in June. (She has stopped driving now though.)

  97. Dawn says:

My mom’s name is Kathy. Her hair color is never the same twice. I had my son 6 weeks ago and when I picked her up the airport I did not recognize her. This time she was two-toned. Bleach Blond up front and a dark brown, almost black in the back. She had long bangs and looked like a skunk. Before I realized that it was my mom (I saw her from a distance and had my son in my arms who was getting fussy) I thought to myself who would do that to their hair. My dad is a great sport, because you never know what she is going to do to her hair. He never complains of says anything, he just smiles.

  98. Kendra says:

My mother’s name is Linda….an interesting factoiod about her is that she seems quite like a Martha Stewart type, but when it comes to fun she likes to dance and lip sync to “Midnight Train to Georgia”.

  99. Tina W says:

My mother’s name is Floye (named after her dad Floyd). Of course hardly noone pronounces it right so she goes by her middle name, Kay. Her and my father married when she was sixteen and he was seventeen because I was in her belly. This year they will be celebrating 40 years of marriage. Pretty incredible!

  100. April C says:

My mom’s name is Cheryl and she is one of ten kids. All those kids are now spread out over various states, but every time one of them turns 50 they all get together for a birthday party.

  101. Lisa T. says:

My mom’s name is Jean. It’s really Norma Jean, but she is NOT proud of having the same name as Marilyn Monroe, so most people call her Jean. If someone calls asking for Norma, we know it’s either a telemarketer or one of my dad’s sisters, who for some explicable reason still call her Norma despite 50 years of correction. Bizarre.

My mom became a church pianist in 5th grade. Can you imagine??

  102. Lisa T. says:

I meant “inexplicable” reason. I need coffee.

  103. fern says:

My mom’s name is Evelyn. But I think the first time my son’s high-pitched voice said “Grandma” it sent her over the moon. She is an amazing woman–way ahead of her time. My mom had natural childbirth in the 50’s while all her friends were getting knocked out-she said she didn’t wait 9 months to sleep through it. She had to go to natural childbirth classes where they showed movies of actual childbirth–in black and white. No one told her there would be blood! Pretty brave for a 23 year old. When I was a kid, my friends moms watched soap operas and ironed. My mom took us on rock collecting hunts and walks in the forest preserve. When my friends were told not to get dirty, we were roaming around the neighborhood and digging in the dirt in our back yard. We had all sorts of animals that we found or would buy at the pet store–turtles, snake, crawfish, dogs, chicken, gerbils, hamsters, fish–all this in the suburbs! She believes childhood should be an adventure. She is right.

The biggest compliment I could every get is “you are a lot like your mom.” I only wish I was.

  104. Katherine says:

Lovely memories and thoughts - but I will admit, I love the story about the little girls eating baby bees best!

My mom is Mary Ann - has always gone by first and middle. She is the oldest of five by several years - grandpa’s active sevice having intervened. When she was in highschool and college, she competed with a synchronized swimming team.

  105. Heather S. says:

My mom’s name is Beth…when my husband and I were dating, he said to me one time, “You know, I love your mom. She looks like she is the kind of mom who would bake cookies for you all day and be so sweet.”
She is sweet, but I don’t think in the 15 years my hub and I have been together, she has baked a single cookie (unless you count no-bake chocolate peanut butter cookies, which you probably can’t because they are,you know…NO BAKE cookies).
She is a woman who loves God fiercly and raised me and my two sisters to do the same. She is a woman that typifies living and leading with that gentle and quiet spirit. I love her to pieces…

  106. Renee says:

My mother’s name is Joan but pronounced Joanne. Her mother spelled her name wrong on her certificate and it stuck. My daughter’s middle name is Joan (said Joanne) and we contemplated using the right spelling, but then she wouldn’t be named after my mom?

PS: how do you always get such cool free stuff?

  107. Sherry says:

Andrea and Colleen. They are my daughters’s godmothers and they do double duty when it comes to caring and lovin’ my daughters. Our life would be flat and dull without them!

  108. Michele says:

My Mom’s name is Mary Louise. My Dad also has a sister named Mary Louise. My mother in law is also Mary Louise. Who knew the name would be so popular in our family?

  109. Heather says:

My mother’s name was Roberta and we lost her to ovarian cancer in 2001. I miss her everyday when I watch my kids. She would have loved them.

The one thing that defined my mother was her generosity, with her own family and those around her. That is the legacy I want to carry on, share and instill in my own kids.

  110. Tabitha says:

I’ve been an admiring ‘lurker’ for awhile now, but thought this a prime chance to make a comment. Because if a UFO is going to land anywhere BUT Texas, it will be in Utah :)

Dawna- She is 1 year and 2 weeks older than her younger sister. She always hated those 2 weeks when her little sister was the same age as she was- she would constantly hear “We’re the same age, we’re the same age…” for those 2 weeks. Now that they are older and grandmas, my mom loves to call her little sister during those two weeks and tease her by saying, “We’re the same age, we’re the same age.”

  111. Sarah says:

My momma’s name is Glenda Sue. She is the most precious person that I know. She poured herself into my sister and me. Interesting fact: She is the fastest reader that I have ever known. She read Gone With the Wind in one day. She can read a hefty novel in a couple of uninterrupted hours. It still amazes me to this day. If she starts reading a book she has to finish it quickly. I’ve never seen her take any longer than 3 days to finish a book.

  112. Coralie says:

My mother’s name is Carole (so is my mil’s, which is handy). She was born and raised in Sydney, the largest city in Australia. When she was 31, she met and married my father (a Canadian) and moved with him to a town in British Columbia that had no stores, no paved roads, no electricity or telephones, and only 45 people. We call that culture shock.

Her father immigrated to Australia from Scotland as a boy, and I have followed in the family tradition by immigrating to the southern United States 10 years ago. It makes me wonder where my daughter will end up.

  113. mary says:

My mothers name is Joyce and everyone calls her Jody.
She is beautiful and strong and has a genuine warmth that charms everyone who meets her.She retired at age 71 and is stil the hardest worker I know. Her energy is amazing.

  114. Jean says:

My mother’s name is Pauline. She left the family farm at 17 to become a nun. She left the convent several years later to pursue other adventures like marriage and raising my sister and I.

  115. Jill S. says:

My mom’s name is Nancy, and I have not a single picture of her with her eyes open. She’s incapable of NOT blinking when there’s a camera near her . . .

  116. Kelley says:

    My mom is Wanda.
You may remember emailing me last year while she was going through thyroid cancer. BTW, she’s doing very well and the scans continue to come back sqeaky clean!

  117. Alex says:

    My mom’s name is Kay

And I know genetics works because I realized yesterday that I try on purses (yes there is a method) just like my mom. I didn’t realize it until I looked over at her and we were both putting the purse next to our leg to see how it looked next to us.

    Ridiculous.

  118. Sandra says:

Mu mother’s name is Bessie. She celebrated her 102nd birthday last October. She is sharp as a tack, lives in an independent apartment in a retirement center. She walks the entire circumference of the center every day several times. Her vision and hearing are both becoming very weak, but she is bravely planning eye surgery in July. She is an inspiration!!

my mom’s name is marilyn, and she can see your aura…

  120. MandyMae says:

Ooh! I want! I can video my baby boy when he does cute things!

My amazing mama’s name is Terry. She was the Homecoming Queen. She’s a wild, silly woman, so to save myself embarrassment around my friends in high school, I told them all she had Tourette’s Syndrome. (She didn’t mind it.)

  121. Kara Messner says:

My mom’s name is Carol. She and her siblings are all readheads. Her parents are not. None of us kids are redheads. Random. She is the best mom ever! Thanks for doing this giveaway. I hope I win!!

  122. Vikki says:

    Hi,
My mom’s name is Carol. She was adopted when she was a baby and I think she regrets not finding her birth mom. She lives was to far away from us but her grandkids and her puppy are her joys.

  123. Missy says:

My mom’s name is Mary but she goes by her middle name Susan (Sue) but my dad calls her Jo. Not sure why.. Two fun facts, when she was 18 my dad rescued her from a religious camp when they wouldn’t let her leave. He seriously snuck in in the middle of the night! And in the last year she learned to play guitar and has written over 50 songs that the Lord has given to her!

  124. Kimberly says:

My mom’s name is Beverly. My mom was born to older parents and was an only child. As a result, she never was too outgoing and even as an adult did not have too many good friends. Now that I am older and have 2 kids of my own, we all have so much fun…my mom says she is finding out what fun stuff there is to experience that she missed out on all those years!

  125. Jenny F. says:

My mom’s name is Joanne Francis. Her middle name comes from her Dad’s first name. I’m not sure of the female/male spelling. The correct spelling may be Frances rather than Francis. I can never remember. Mom would correct me on that one. When we were growing up and we would be out in public I could never get her attention by calling mom. She got so use to other kids yelling mom that she assumed it was some other mom being called for. I learned of this early on and took to calling her Joanne Francis in a very loud voice. Even now if I can not get her attention in a crowd I will yell: JOANNE FRANCIS. Maybe that attention comes from memories of being a kid. I think all of us stand in attention when we hear our first and middle names used together. I would love that flippy camera thingy… thanks for this fun contest. I have been enjoying everyone’s comments.

  126. Nicki says:

My Mom’s name is Callie, but my friends and I call her “Naked Mom”.

My mom has always liked to hang out in the buff, that is until my little brother was about six. Apparently she still sleeps naked as the day she was born. How do I know this? She was staying the night at our house one night and walked out of her room in the morning (to use the restroom) at the same time my husband was leaving for work. Umm, uh oh. Hubby was not happy.

  127. Heather says:

My mom’s name is Claudia. She was named after a popular character from the soap opera, Ryan’s Hope. She never really liked her name very much because she could never find any cute magnets or cups with “Claudia” on it.

  128. aggiema says:

My Mom’s name was Wanda (folks at church called her “Wonderful Wanda”) She passed away in Feb. so this will be my first Mother’s Day in 44 years without her. She was a special person and it would take me all day to write enough to do her justice. She loved roses and all things the Lord made but mostly she love ME and my daughter!

My moma is Marcella Eva. She is 87 on May 22,2008. She thought her name was Marcella Edna for about 55 years. When she saw her birth certificate which was recorded by a midwife. She saw that the midwife(her greatgrandmother) had recorded Eva as a middle name. She was so happy about this as she did not really like the Edna part. She always signs her name Marcella E. and smiles. Her first name, Marcella, was from her father’s girlfriend in Paris during WWI. She was the first living child of Goldy, her mother’s 13 children. All were born at home. Mom is a lot of fun and a strong woman. No one forgets her. She has a huge faith in Jesus that has sustained her from her childhood.

  131. Carrie says:

My mother in law’s name is Decleta, but we call her Penny, well the kids call her Nana and I call her Mom!! My mom passed away when I was 13 and 3 years later I met my husband to be. Penny has taken me in like her own daughter and loved me unconditionally. I’m turly blessed to have such a wonderful Mom!!

  132. Dawn says:

My mom’s name is Kay. She can fix anything. I had a lamp that quit working and I was going to throw it away. She came over to babysit and brought a whole rewiring kit with her and by the time I came home she rewired the lamp. She grew up on a farm with just her, her mom and her dad. Her mother was an invalid so my mom had to learn to do a lot of things, and it’s really come in handy for us kids. We have our own maintenance lady at our disposal.

  133. Kim (aka Doodles) says:

Mom’s name: Marlene / she feels it is an unusual name.

EVERYONE calls her “Babe” / it’s been her nickname since she was about 5-6 years old. I’ve only known her to be called Babe - everything from “Auntie Babe” to co-workers calling my mom (who is a 73 year old, babe), “Babe.”

  134. Erin says:

My mom’s name is Becky. But it should be Martha, as in Marth Stewart. She is a genius at decorating. She picks out beautiful colors and furniture and accessories and is constantly redoing rooms in her house. I hope that I inherit half of her design touch.

  135. Owlhaven says:

My awesome mom’s name is Hazel. She has been involved in helping women give birth for about 35 years.

    Mary, mom to many

  137. Leslie says:

My mother is Mary Ella. I am really proud to have her as my mama.

One interesting thing about us that our voices sound EXACTLY the same. When there is a message on the answering machine, I have to listen very closely to find out it if is her, or if it is one that I left :)

  138. julianne says:

My mom is Dorothy, and so was her mother. She has beautiful auburn hair, and when she was a little girl, sometimes people would call her “Red.” She would tell them “Don’t call me Red–call me Peetie Pie,” because that’s what her mother called her.

  139. Angela says:

Cheryl, but it’s pronounced like “chair” and not “share”. She had 9 children. I had no idea how amazing a fact that was until I had one child. She’s amazing, for a million reasons and more.

  140. Gennifer says:

My moms name is Judy. She loves to find people she used to know and reconnect. Even friends of us kids that we went to school with in 2 grade. I don’t know if these people remember her, but she gets a kick out of finding all about their lives when she finds them. Right now she’s planning a reunion of all her cousins who have not seen each other for many decades.

  141. Kristin Evans says:

My mom’s name was Ann. She passed away when I was 14. She was an incredible mom! A little known factoid is that she had a way with training dogs. Our dogs growing up always walked without a leash in the neighborhood and would hang out in the front yard never leaving the yard. I just thought that was the way dogs were till I got my own. Now I wonder what my mom did to train them while we were in school!

  142. Keryn says:

My mom’s name is LaDonna. She lived on a snowy farm in northern Utah until she was eight, and then the family moved to Las Vegas–where she has lived ever since. And she swears she will never ever move back to where it snows. But my sister and I–who both live in northern Utah now–keep having babies in the wintertime, so she still has to deal with it! Hee hee.

  145. Elizabeth says:

My mother’s name was Evelyn. She was born on St. Lucy’s Day. She was always cross that her baby sister was named Lucy, while she was stuck with a name she didn’t like! I called her “Mummy” and later,”Mum” –names which suited her much better.

  146. Robin M. says:

My mom’s name is Faye. Well, actually its Glenda Faye, but she always been called Faye. I’ve often wondered it was because of Glenda… the good witch. But, at least she was a good witch. My mom’s not a witch though. She is a middle child - with just a touch of that middle child syndrome. She is very crafty (good with crafts I mean) like flower arranging, jewelry making, sewing, etc.

  147. staci at laughing mommy says:

My mother’s name is Maris. (Sounds like Merris)

Her nickname is “Electronic Grandma”. She is very difficult to shop for because she is allergic to cosmetics and perfume, doesn’t typically wear jewelry, is not interested in home decorating or cooking.

This gadget would be perfect for her. She loves pictures and video.

    Thanks!

  148. Robinznest says:

My mom’s name is Audrey. She is going to be 72 years old this year. But she looks 60. And it’s all natural. I only hope I have her genes!

  149. momof8 says:

My mom’s name is Nellie. Back in the day when you could send home baked treats to school, she would mix up several batches of sugar cookie dough at Christmas. She would cut out, bake, frost, and decorate cookies for all four of us kids to take to our classes. Being a busy Mom, this baffles me. Even though we looked forward to it and loved it at the time, I am pretty sure we didn’t appreciate what it was she was doing! Especially with those dang aluminum cookie cutters that like to eat the dough!

  150. Fuzzy says:

My Mother’s name is Margaret, but everyone calls her Peggy. Her dad used to call her “Peg-o-my-heart” which I loved. She is the most amazing mother of 7, big hearted, patient, kind woman in the world, and I hope to be half of what she is. Although, she is only 5′ tall, so that would be interesting….

  151. Nelson's Mama says:

My Mom’s name is Janice, all the grandgirls call her Janny and now most of the adults do too!

She taught me to skinny dip when I was eight!

  152. SassyPants says:

Ooo, that lil toy looks like so much fun. I want one! So, about my Momma:
Susan - My mother is my hero. She raised me by working 3 jobs and still finding ways to make me feel like I was never alone. When I was in junior high she started a tradition with us that every Sunday morning before church we would sit on the couch with our cups of coffee and catch up. Thinking back to those mornings now always makes me weepy. How did she do it all?

  153. Joanna says:

My Mom’s name is Clodella. I’m pretty sure it’s some German name for nerves of steal or goes where angels fear. Even though she’s stubborn she’s also very creative - it’s disgusting.

  154. erica says:

my ma’s monikker is Bessie D. She is 87 and rarely called just Bessie. She is a microbiologist Ohio farm girl, stubborn beyond words.

  155. Plastic Daffodils says:

My mom’s name is Susan, and her middle name is Annette. For some reason, she hates her middle name and won’t tell it to anyone, but I like it. If I have a daughter I might give her the middle name of Annette, so she’ll have to like it.

  156. A&EMom says:

My mother’s name is Debi. I wouldn’t trade her for an other mom in the world. One of my mom’s most outlandish stories comes from her childhood. She and her older sister were playing “Princess and Witch” so my sweet mother made her dear sister a nasty brew to drink that included bleach. AND MY AUNT DRANK IT.

  157. Liss says:

My mom’s name is Becky. She is my ultimate role model - she homeschooled all three of us, directs the children’s ministry at het church, and was never too busy to remind me how much she loves me. Now that I’m a wife and mother, I know how hard she worked!!!

  158. Nicole says:

My mom’s name is Joan. She is a wonderful lady, we have a great time together. An intersting tidbit…my mom’s dad passed away when she was 7. Things were tight and her mom (my grandmother)and she moved into a small 2 bedroom house with my mom’s two brothers. Because there was only 2 bedrooms, my mom shared a bed with her mom until the day she got married. Since then she has shared a bed with my dad. I find it crazy to think that she has never had a room of her own, or a bed of her own!

  159. trixiefan says:

Melba - She is my aunt, but has been more like a mother to me than my own mother. She babysat my girls when they were little. She had has a tough life, but manages to usually put on a smile.

  160. Mary B says:

My mother’s name is Mary. I was not named after her because she didn’t become my mother until I was 16 months old. She graciously took on the task of raising 4 motherless children plus 3 of her own when she married my dad. Today they celebrate their 37th anniversary.
I wish I knew my “real mom” her name was Janna but I am thankful God placed Mary in my dad’s life.

  161. Kellye says:

My mom’s name is Loretta. And if she read your story about a grandmother who kidnapped grandkids, this would give her a good idea. She is very serious about the grandma business. In fact I do not know what happened to the woman that raised me.

  162. Janet Timpson says:

My mothers name was Bertha. Her sister kidnapped her because she did not like how my mother was living her life at the time. She took my mother to St. Louis.

  163. Confused Foreigner says:

My Mom’s name is Cora. She is the youngest in her family. Her mother started having kids at age 19 and finished with my mother at age 44. That makes an age gap of 25 years from youngest to oldest siblings.

Another cool fact is that my Mom and Dad learned to use the internet at age 69, when I first went overseas for an extended period of time. Now they can whiz around the internet like nobodies business.

  164. Manda says:

My mom’s name is Donna. Her baby pictures and mine are almost identical, except hers are in black and white and mine are in color. When my daughter is born late this summer, I’ll be interested to see if her baby photos match mine and my mom’s.

  165. NoMasNinos says:

My mom’s name is Sonia. She once waded through the Rio Grande while she was 7 months pregnant. Strong-willed as she is, she ignored my grandmothers call to return. My brother is now 31 years old.

  166. Stephanie says:

My mothers name is Bonita. In the small town she grew up in everyone went by there first and middle name so her real name is Bonita Gail. Everytime we hear about someone named Bobby Joe, or Billy Bob, we always say they must be from Tahoka. My grandmother is Bonnie Mae and my aunt Betty Lou, they, surprise, are also from Tahoka.

  167. Quirky says:

My mother’s name is Cindy, and she has the fabulous ability to plan things out and build them (furniture, decks, anything). She can just “see” how things work, and can not only build it but improve on it to fit her needs. When she was in school, she took an aptitude test that said that she would be a perfect shop teacher. She was very excited until she was informed that women were not allowed to take shop, much less teach it. Seems that in those days, women just weren’t “mechanically minded”. But Mom continued creating and building anyway, and taught us that you should never let someone tell you that you can’t do something that you love. Now I build and create things too.

  168. Kacey says:

My Mom was Beatrice and she liked it so much that she named my oldest sister Beatrice. She wanted me to name my firstborn Beatrice, but I held out for Lesley. My other children have names that mean lovely, godly things, but poor Lesley — it means “from the gray fort”. I still like it better than Beatrice. I’ve read through all these comments and there are certainly some unusual names among these readers.

  169. midlife mommy says:

My mother’s name was Rose, and I lost her last September. She was quite the talker, and though I wasn’t very close to her growing up, or in my 20’s, or in most of my 30’s, we did have the opportunity to become friends over the last eight years. I chose my cell phone provider based on the most amount of minutes I could buy for the least amount of money, so I could call her every day on the way home from work. We would talk for 45 minutes to an hour or more, depending on traffic. Once, while my mother was on a roll, the call dropped. I called back off and on for 15 minutes before I could get through to her (she didn’t have call waiting, so all I got was a busy signal). She literally talked for that long before she realized that I wasn’t there anymore. That was my mom!

  170. Gina Hill says:

My mom’s name is Joyce. She made and sold sock monkeys to put my dad through college. Hoo-ah!

  171. Beth Plemons says:

My mom’s name is Kay…one thing she used to do was sunbathe with MOTOR OIL!!! When she was young, she achieved dark tan results…I remember going camping when I was a kid and she tried out her good ole 10W/30, and recieved 2nd & 3rd degree burns! What in the world was she thinking?!! I have no idea where this plan came from in her younger days, but it definitely isn’t a good one!

  172. jodi says:

My mother’s name is Pam. She is terrified of throwing up, was born the night before Halloween and doesn’t remember her dreams. She is also the best grandmother I’ve ever met and I am frequently jealous of my children because they get to be grandparented by her.
