  • fotoflot will float your photo boat

    December 11, 2008

    Another fabulous give away! Y’all are going to love this…

    Awhile back, I posted a photo essay and wrote about how I used Picasa (a free and super easy-to-use photo editing program by Google) to turn an unimpressive photo into something somewhat closer to impressive.   Shortly thereafter, I got an email from the fotoflot people, one of Picasa’s partners, offering to send me one of their products. All I had to do was go to their website, upload a photo and then wait by the mailbox.

    So I went to their website and frankly, I didn’t quite get it.  I wasn’t even sure how to pronounce the product name.  At any rate, I uploaded a photo I had taken recently, one that I actually had intended to  have printed and framed.  I had no idea really what to expect, but about a week later, I got the fotoflot in the mail and I have been a fotoflot evangelist ever since.

    So what the heck is a fotoflot you ask and why is it so cool? I’ll tell you.

    What the heck is it? Basically these nice people take your photo and print it on professional grade photo paper and then fuse it onto a 1/8 inch piece of acrylic.  The edges are precision laser finished for a sleek and polished edge.  To the back, they add two magnets which snap to the mounting system (either a wall bracket or desk top easel or even an electrical panel!) making the photo appear to be floating an inch or so from the surface for a very clean and modern look.  (Photo below provided by fotoflot).

    Photobucket

    Why is it so cool? I like about 50 different things about this product, but the key things are that no frame means all the focus is on your fabulous photo and no glass means no glare.  fotoflots are light weight, so you can hang them nearly anywhere and they can be wiped down with a damp cloth if they get smudged or dusty, not that that ever happens at my house.  And the best part? You can pop out one photo and replace it with another in seconds.  Try that with a framed photo. I dare you.

    So how do you go about getting a fotoflot of your very own?  Basically you upload a picture, either at their site,  or even easier, directly from one of their partners (Picasa, Kodak Gallery, SmugMug or Zenfolio), choose the size you want (they have about 28 different sizes and shapes including panoramics) and mounting system (wall or desk top) and then go wait by the mailbox.

    If you would like to win a $70 gift certificate! (woo hoo!) from fotoflot, and you know you do, go take a look at their stuff and then come back here and tell me what you think.  I’m tellin’ ya, this is the best gift of the holiday season (and every occasion thereafter) in my opinion. Give this to your mom and she will finally like you better than your brother.

    I’ll use random.org to choose a winner at some point over the weekend.

      If I can ever get my 5 kids home at the same time on a weekend, and get our family picture taken….this would be a very nice gift.

      Love learning about new options!

    5. Antique Mommy says:

      I was like Trina at first, I thought, “Oh this is kind of interesting…” But it’s way more cool than can be described in words. It’s the perfect gift for my older relatives whose closets overflow with useless Christmas gifts past that they don’t want or need. Every holiday occasion I can just order them a new fotoflot and they can pop out the old pic and put in the new (all by themselves!) or change out pictures by season. I just think that is so cool.

      That looks amazing. I was skeptical until I looked at the website. I would love to receive a $70 gift certificate to it. I was just ‘made redundant’ as the British say, yesterday (as of 12/31) so money is going to be tight…this would make a good way to buy a Christmas present for my mom.

    24. Wendy says:

      You have gotten me so hooked on photo editing since you told us about picasa. I have since then switched to gimp for most things, but since then I have made so many cool things (including my own collage to put on my Christmas card and and edited photos put together on gifts for my husband for Christmas from my kids) Thank you for getting me started on this! I love that this site lets you make these dimensions of pictures. Other than there, it is hard to get pictures in those dimensions printed, much less find a frame for them.

    25. Jenni says:

      I think this is extremely cool. I love the way the photo looks like it’s hovering away from the wall. Thanks for the heads-up about this deal, and for the chance to win!

      Love this! I’m trying to decide which photos I could use. Definitely a collage – perhaps my daughter’s first five years sitting on Santa’s lap?

    33. Robyn says:

      As my husband could tell you, I’m a suck for anything resembling a photo frame. It’s a terrible affliction! :)

      December 11th, 2008 at 10:22 am

    34. Debra says:

      This is truly awesome. I have 5 kids and numerous foreign exchange students over the past 10 years. My wall is a hodge podge of photos and frames from their school graduation photos and the younger kids school photos. I swap them out each year for the younger kids. My wall looks so mismatched with all the different frames. I would use this for putting all 8 of my photos on the wall without the ugly frames that don’t match.

      This is amazing. What will they think of next? I would immediately give this as a gift to my daughter who is a budding photographer. Also want to order one for wedding photos of our son’s wedding. I love the fact that I wouldbn’t have to pick JUST ONE but could change out photos. Totally cool.

    38. SG says:

      When we bought our Mac my heart was broken to find that Picasa did not work on a Mac. I seriously might not have gone with a Mac had I realized that before because I SOOO loved Picasa! I still miss it and keep hoping it will become Mac friendly someday. I photo just doesn’t do it for me. But anyway, I bet fotoflots are super cool. I wonder if I can still do that from a Mac. Anyone know?

      * * *

      The fotoflot folks say there is a program called Crossover that will allow you to run the PC version of Picasa on your Mac. More info. on that can be found here: http://www.technofileonline.com/texts/tec071308.html
      They say the program is about $40. ~ AM

    41. Kai says:

      I like that they are easily changeable, but the wall mount mechanism looks very complicated to install.

      I LOVE the clean line look though. When I think of how many hours I’ve spent cutting mats and framing…the concept becomes more and more appealing!

      * * * * *

      NOT complicated at all Kai. Even easier than hanging a regular picturel It’s a metal plate that you basically hammer/screw into the wall. That’s it. And the magnets on the back of the picture stick to the metal plate. Because I’m a slacker/doofus I hung mine on an existing picture hook. Installing the bracket properly is on my to do list. ~ AM

      * * *

      No, those aren’t my pictures. I probably should make that clear. Go to their site and snoop around and you’ll see some great examples. The pictures I took of my fotoflot didn’t show it off very well, primarily because the lighting in my house is extremely weird and also because I really have no idea how the camera works. I’ll keep trying and put up a picture when I get a good one. ~ AM

    94. Rebecca says:

      I used to be such a fool getting my kids pictures taken like EVERY 2 months, Then I had the third and decided I am done wasting money on pictures that my hubby wont let me hang because a) he would rather not have the holes in the wall and b) I am hoping one day to be moving out of this house into a bigger one, BUT until that happens I am taking back my walls and hanging stuff myself. This would be very cool

    111. Antique Mommy says:

      I too felt like the fotoflots were a little pricey until my husband reminded me of the many framed prints I have in the back of the closet that I spent $75 or more for framing/matting/glass that have inexplicably gotten a bug under the glass or somehow gotten stuck to the glass (ruined) or no longer work with our decor or worked in the old house but not in the new one…

    153. Juanita says:

      You know how you have a photo that you would love to enlarge a bit and then frame to hang on a wall and then you get the photo back from the printers and it sits in it’s hard envelope because you can’t find that frame that is just right because they are all ugly or are just slightly off in color or are too wide or too narrow for balance or or or…This is a great solution and I love the fact that there are so many sizes to choose from.
