  • A Scrappy Kinda Gal

    April 1, 2010

I used to be a scrapbooker back in the day when scrapbooking meant gluing ticket stubs and photographs into a book.

I started a scrapbook back in 1996 when I met AD.  I kept it up faithfully until we started building the house we live in now and I haven’t touched it since.  That was 10 years ago.

When I learned I was pregnant, scrapbooking had come into it’s own and there were mega-stores with stickers and fancy paper and classes and cropathons, all of which overwhelmed me. Nonetheless, with good intentions, I went out and bought all the scrapbook stuff imagining I would make an awesome book for my baby.  Aaaaand, its all still sitting in the bag with the receipt.

Somewhere along the way, scrap booking went digital and although I found digital cutting and pasting waaaay more appealing than literal cutting and pasting, I just never ventured into it but always thought that it would be something right up my artsy ally.

Recently, Scrapblog.com contacted me and asked me if I would like to try out their digital scrapping site and so I took it for a spin and about 300 hours later I can say with all sincerity, “Hi. My name is Antique Mommy and I’m a scrapaholic.”

On Scrapblog, You can make a free on-line Scrapblog, just like a regular blog only with scrap, or you can get it printed up into a nice little book. They have all the scrap you could ever want, some of it free, some of it you purchase in their marketplace, and you can even add music if you want and make it private or public, just like any other blog.

I used to mock the scrapbookers and how they would hole away for weekends cropping and stickering, but now I understand their addiction. And addicts need friends and this is where you come in.

Scrapblog.com would like to give one of y’all a Scrapblog package consisting of a keepsake book and two cards with free shipping.  Would y’all be interested in something like that?

If so, leave a comment below and I’ll draw a winner on Monday and hopefully by that time I’ll have my on-line scrapbook ready to show you!  Here’s a page I’m working on.

That would be so cool! I have just been looking into digital scrapbooking, but have been a little overwhelmed by it. Maybe this would be the kick-in-the-pants I need!

That’s wonderful– I like that better than the shutterfly and snapfish versions– too “plain” for me sometimes. I’d like to play around with the “cyber-stickers”!!!! Of course I’d have to scan all the baby pictures of my son since we didn’t have the digital camera back then….

You can also just take digital pictures of your old pictures and get some pretty decent results. I did that with a big box of my MILs old photos. Put them on a nice flat surface in good light so that you don’t have to use a flash. Takes a lot less time than scanning.

I’m in! I am a scrap-a-holic, addicted to buying all of the cute paper, stickers, tools, etc. Occasionally, I might even make a page or two with it!

What kills me about scrapbooking – we come to Dallas about once a year to visit friends. Last year, when were there, there were NO scrapbook stores in the D/FW area still in business! You have got be kidding me. The greatest store – in Collevyille, was belly-up. So sad!

    9. Quirky says:

Now this is perfect! I’ve never been a fan of the traditional scrapbooking process (something about my tendency to accidentally chop my finger off with any kind of scissor or cutting mechanism), but this could actually work for me.

I predict large chunks of my time now going to scrapblogging!

I’m not a scrapper at all, but I keep thinking that these digital albums are the way to go. It would be fun to try it out!

i have always aspired to be one of those creative, put-together types that artfully arranges their snips and photos and inspiring quotes into a presentation that takes people’s breath away…
it will never happen. i have discovered the photo books from Shutterfly! i have one for each year of our married life and just did my son’s birth book. starting on his first year…its a fabulous thing!

Is there more to the link embedded in the photo? It is incomplete as such at the moment…

This looks so cool! How much time is necessary for investment in doing something like this? Say, if a couple has approximately seventeen gazillion photos that need organization?

As a fellow scrapper-wanna-be, I well know the feeling of bags and bags of THE CUTEST STUFF that will make THE GREATEST BOOKS that sits for years in the bags, untouched. I would LOVE to try digital scrapping…

haha! a couple times a year, my mom is one of those scrapaholics who holes up for the weekend to scrapbook. her church friends actually have an annual retreat.

I would love to give this a try! I’ve been a big scrapbooker and have not done much since my wedding. Seriously, books and books of my sisters kids then I get married, get pregnant, have Little Guy, get pregnant again and I have no books of my life…uggg!

Maybe I need to go digital and this would be a great way to try it out!

I have tried all forms, and love something about each one. However, I love, love, love scrapblog because it does what takes me hours to do and it’s so intuitive! I love the link to be able to grab photo’s from other places versus uploading. Plus, their customer response to suggestions is great!

    22. Julie at Elisharose says:

I would really like to try this. I sort of made a scrapbook for my son, but I didn’t do a thing for my daughter. Then there are all those boxes and files full of things that need to be saved for posterity that at this point, well, aren’t.

      April 1st, 2010 at 12:59 pm

    23. Julie says:

I’d definitely give it a try. I love scrapbooking and am probably sitting on $1,000 worth of supplies but with 4 kids I have almost no time. Now every time I look at my little scrapbook corner I just feel guilty. I still want to preserve this stuff. I’ve tried some other digital scrapbooking in Photoshop and you’d think that as a graphic designer I would love it. I don’t. I’m never as happy as I am with the physical kind. But I’m seriously going to look into this.

    33. Beth in the City says:

Yes, I want to learn more about this type of thing! I’m a scrap on paper kind of girl and I want to make a scrapbook to mail to my kid’s grandparents who are missionaries in Thailand.

      April 1st, 2010 at 5:29 pm

    34. Kiy says:

Oh, me me me, pick me! I too fell for all that. I have boxes and boxes and boxes of stuff stacked in the garage. We’ve moved three times and I haven’t touched those boxes once. Maybe I should just put them on the curb. But, oh the $$$ I spent. I keep thinking I will find the time to go through them and at least donate the usable stuff (that hasn’t melted itself together) to a school or something.

So, easy, fun and (relatively) fast … that’s for me!

      April 1st, 2010 at 5:54 pm

    35. Lisa says:

I would love to do this. I always seem to get overwhelmed at step 1, trying to decide which pictures to upload. Maybe I would be motivated with Scrapblog.

      April 1st, 2010 at 6:06 pm

    36. Katherine says:

I have always wanted to scrapbook, but knew that I would get very obsessed and never get married. So, I put it off and eventually got married and had kids. I walk by the scrapbook section in craft stores and think how fun it would be, but then I remember my imperfection of trying to be a perfectionist and how I would probably spend countless hours and bucket loads of money. This Scrapblog sounds FUN.

    37. Cathy says:

I, too, have mocked scrapbookers – but lately I’ve been thinking of all the photos stashed in assorted boxes and trapped in my digital camera and secretly lust for having neatly organized photos to look at. I had told myself I’d organize the photos when my little boy entered school….he’s now nine. Never heard of Scrapblog but it sounds kind of perfect!

    47. Lisa Smith (@stretchmarkmama) says:

I have such nice cut-and-paste scrapbooks for the first two kids (baby books, anyway) and then nothing, nothing for the third. Went through at least three solid years of guilt over that and finally just bit the bullet and did an online photo book at Walgreens. The price was right and I feel really good about getting it done–but it doesn’t have the “pop” that I think a more scrapbooking style of company might provide. I’d be interested in checking them out.

    48. Deborah says:

That would be so fun! I’ve never considered digital scrapbooking–whenever I want to scrapbook, I have to hide myself away in a closed-off room to keep the cats out of my stuff; digital would be so much easier!

I too still have all my scrapbook dreams in the original paperbag from when they were purchased about 9 years ago! I have been faithfully journaling all his life events, but the photos sit in a box (They are labeled tho: Does that count?!) May doing it online would work out better for those of us who are time and artistically challenged!

Yes! Once again, I’m reminded of how much we have in common. I’ve always been intimidated by those scrap-booky people, too!

great idea!! after 6 years of infertility and several miscarriages I now have a 3 1/2 month old and haven’t even developed a single picture yet although we have taken lots. I have been wanting to scrapbook, but dreading it too, this looks much easier!

Giggle…I am sitting in my craft room as I “speak”. I have tons of paper scrapping stuff, some of which I have used. But, then, I discovered digital. That is mostly what I have done for the last year. I love it because the supplies are so easy to obtain and they are right in my computer. I am working on a paper book for my grand-daughters right now and enjoying that process.
Thanks for the opportunity of winning a nice goody.

Do I understand that Scrapblog is free to use? You can use it free but buy some extra supplies in their marketplace, then a printed out book costs something? That sounds like something I may need to look into…

Mind you, we are not picture people. Even slightly. I can go a month without taking pictures of my off-spring. A fact that horrifies my MIL on a rather regular basis.

I’m too scared to have a blog of my family/kids, but I long to share pictures of my kids with my old college friends. Maybe this is the answer.

How fun! I’ve done the scrapbooking thing, but like you, I’m way behind. Digital seems the way to go!

Last month I finally gave up. I gave all my stuff to my niece. She was so excited! It’s amazing how much stuff I’ve bought over the years and never used it.

I have some nice photo albums (not quite scrapbooks) started but I am about 3 years behind…. sigh. Sometimes when I wake up at night I start thinking – what if something happens to me, my child will just have boxes of photos and an unfinished baby book to remember what her mother thought about her cute funny self – crazy I know! I would love to give the digital thing a try!

FWIW your idea of taking a digital photo of a picture is not far from what the professionals do. I used to work in a public affairs office for the army reserve and the guy in charge had a special tripod that would point straight down (to avoid having distortion b/c of not holding the camera properly) and lights rigged up to take photos of photos/documents/newspapers, etc.

What cute pictures of teeny, tiny Sean. Thanks for posting, and count me in. I’ve got a lot of learning to do on this.
